Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years: Happy Birthday to 1,974 Lucky Ones

Year 1974. That is when the history of the Porsche 911 Turbo begins. The model with which it all began, the Porsche 911 Turbo Type 930 incorporated the turbo technology used in the 917/10 and 917/30 racing cars. Yes, in a production sports car, achieving extraordinary performance. Each generation has surpassed itself and now, half a century after that, comes the Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years To pay tribute, a special edition limited to 1,974 unitsfor a price of 315,667 eurosDeliveries will begin in autumn 2024.

Based on the Porsche 911 Turbo S introduced in 2019, the design pays homage to heritage. Standard side vinyl graphics are a nod to the historic livery of the Porsche 911 RSR Turbo introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973 (the precursor to the 911 Turbo). Featuring a body colour in Turbonite, exclusive to Porsche Turbos, this shade also appears on the rear engine hood, fuel filler flap, wheels, Porsche crest or as a contrasting colour on the “Turbo 50” logo.

Another historical reference is the use of Anthracite Grey on the rear wing profile, rear apron, base of the wing mirrors and air intake trim. A shield with a turbocharger icon and the years 1974-2024 is also affixed to the rear bonnet grille. When the door is open, an LED light projects the image of a turbocharger onto the ground.

The interior is captivating. It is reminiscent of the first Porsche 911 Turbo models with upholstery McKenzie tartan on the centre section of the seats and inner door panels. Turbonite details distinguish the car from the production 911 Turbo S on the seat belts, controls, decorative stitching, the trim with black leather inserts and the Porsche Crest on the GT sports steering wheel.

The illuminated “Turbo 50” logo also appears on the door sills, finished in black polished aluminium. The headrests of the adaptive sports seats Plus also feature the logo embroidered on the back of the left rear seat. Above the glove compartment is a commemorative aluminium plaque bearing the emblem and the limited edition number of each unit. The icing on the cake is a specially designed Porsche Design Subsecond analogue clock on the dashboard.

Does that seem like too little to you? Well, the brand offers the Heritage Design 50 Years of Turbo packageof historical inspiration. With this option the body changes to a green Aventurine Metallic, reminiscent of the 911 Turbo of the 1970s, with satin white livery for a racing number of your choice between 0 and 99, a 50-year Turbo logo and a Porsche logo (non-mandatory elements). The historic Porsche crest from 1964 is used on the front bonnet and the Sport Classic wheel covers, and the “Turbo 50” and “Porsche” logos are in gold. The interior is further individualised with additional leather elements and elements in a tartan design.

The engine

The Porsche 911 Turbo 50 Years equips the 3.7-litre twin-turbocharged boxer engine with variable turbine geometry (VTG) from the 911 Turbo S. It develops 650 HP The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 is powered by a powerful 478 kW (478 kW) and a torque of 800 Nm. With a curb weight of 1,640 kilograms, each HP needs to move just 2.52 kg/hp. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 8.9 seconds. Power is transmitted to the wheels via the eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive system, which incorporates Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and electronically controlled self-locking rear differential.

The sports exhaust system with black tailpipes is standard, as is the 10-millimetre lower Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, the front axle lift system and the Matrix LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus. PCCB carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, with black-painted calipers.

As if that were not enough, owners will also have the 911 Turbo 50 Years chronograph equipped with the COSC-certified Porsche Design caliber WERK 01.200 with function flyback, with a black dial and Turbonite elements imitating the dashboard clock. The strap, made of the car’s black leather, has decorative Turbonite stitching and a folding clasp. Its transparent case allows a view of the winding rotor, reminiscent of the wheels of the 911 Turbo 50, and the limited edition number engraved on the titanium case, which corresponds to the car number.
