Taking advantage of the Motoamerica Round, of which Wayne Rainey is president since its creation, Californian has left us a unique stamp again in Laguna Dry. And for the first time since the accident that changed his life in 1993, he climbed a motorcycle on the Californian track.
Of course, unlike what we saw in Goodwood three years ago, the motorcycle is not its YZR500 but also a very special motorcycle. This is a Yamaha XSR900 GP specifically adapted for him by Yamaha Motor Europa, in collaboration with the American team. Aesthetically it is clear that it is inspired precisely in the mythical 500 of Rainey, but it has been modified conscientiously so that the Californian can handle it without any limitation.
The most important change of all those we see is the inclusion of the Y-MT Automated Transmission System, which allows you to change your departure without the need to operate a conventional clutch. This system, which is already available in some brand models, is not in the XSR900 GP and from there part of the work out of conscientious.
Aesthetically, in addition to painting with the typical colors of the YZR500 of Rainey, they gave it a touch of replica with details such as the chassis painted in black, as well as the tires so that the resemblance was as close as possible.
Adapt the motorcycle to Rainey’s conditions opens a door to people with reduced mobility
But there is more than aesthetic change and modifications to include Y-AMT. Due to Wayne’s physical conditions, Yamaha incorporated structural reinforcements and a support system so that the three -time world champion could be kept safely above the motorcycle.
And the whole is not intended for exposure or shining in a room: it has been developed with the intention that Rainey could enjoy a real experience on two wheels. A philosophy that marks perfectly with the way in which the pilot himself has faced his career and his life after the accident that truncated his sports stage and conditioned the rest of his life.
As we said, it is not the first time we see Rainey on a motorcycle after his injury – he did it in 2022 during the Goodwood Festival – but this occasion has a different meaning. It is to return to Laguna Dry, cites that that fateful 1993 could not play, lead a return of honor and do it in full emotional form, is to close a circle, a stage.
But behind the return of Rainey there is more than that and that is that little by little doors begin to open so that, people with reduced mobility, can continue enjoying the motorcycle. Something that is logically easier in circuit than on the street for safety reasons. What is certain is that thanks to advances like Y-Amb we are a closer step
