The state of Italian roads has become a structural problem with signs of a national emergency. A topic that in recent days has gained relevance after the images of Carmelo Carvellothe parish priest of the town of Santa Rita, in the province of Caltanissetta, shovel in hand trying to cover the holes in the main road that gives access to the town.
As usually happens in these cases, social networks exploded almost in unison and furiously. And not without reason. Basically because the image is regrettable and, furthermore, it shows the sad and harsh reality we face: there seem to be no solutions to the real problems. A situation that can be totally extrapolated to the state of our roads, as we have already stated over the last few months.
Carmelo Carvello and his desire to help his parishioners
Carmelo Carvello’s case is just the staging of the contrasting decline of state infrastructure. Italy, as happens in Spain, supposedly allocates part of its budget to the improvement and maintenance of these as a whole. But the reality, at least what is perceived, is that we are literally “left by the hand of God,” despite the efforts of this parish priest.
In fact, he himself has declared after the commotion that the news has produced: “The reason for my intervention is pastoral and civic, not protest”. An action that Carvello claims to be the result of many faithful having told him “the difficulty of getting to the town, but there are also residents who travel along this road several times a day for family and school reasons.”
Carmelo Carvello concludes: “A family had to pay a thousand euros for damage caused to their car by potholes. Many people suffer punctures, and even local businesses are seeing their clientele decrease. When giving to charity becomes a risk, now is the time to do it.”
The story of this parish priest is one of many that are currently being experienced in Italy due to the state of its roads. Recently the government team of another transalpine town decided to prohibit the circulation of motorcycles on one of its main roads. The reason? You can imagine it and if by any chance you don’t feel like doing it, you also have the possibility of reading the complete article that we dedicated to the matter.
