Spain launches its first variable speed limit using artificial intelligence

Spain begins to introduce smart road solutions with the implementation of a system that breaks with the traditional concept of a fixed speed limit. Instead of a static figure, drivers will encounter variable limits that will change depending on the traffic situation, aiming for smoother and safer driving.

As we told you last year, the project is already underway on a stretch of approximately 150 km between El Vendrell, in Tarragona, and Maçanet de la Selva, in Girona. It is one of the busiest corridors in the country, especially since the elimination of tolls, making it an ideal environment to test this model.

This is how the dynamic speed limit works

The operation is based on the constant collection of data through sensors, cameras and advanced vision systems. All this information is analyzed using artificial intelligence, which interprets the traffic status and road conditions in real time to make immediate decisions.

Based on this analysis, the light panels on the road show the appropriate speed limit at all times. In this way, the system not only reacts to problems, but also tries to anticipate them, reducing risk situations such as sudden braking, traffic jams or sudden changes of pace.

One of the most relevant aspects is that these limits are mandatory. Depending on factors such as rain, fog, wind or even the presence of an accident, the maximum speed can be progressively reduced to 100, 80 or even 60 km/h, adapting to the reality of the road at all times.

The choice of AP-7 was not by chance. Known as the Mediterranean highway, it supports a very high volume of traffic and has sections with a significant history of accidents. Precisely for this reason, it has become the perfect laboratory for a technology that seeks to improve road safety through anticipation and intelligent traffic management.

If the results are positive, this system could be extended to other Spanish highways in the coming years, marking the beginning of a new stage in traffic management where artificial intelligence will play an increasingly leading role.
