The Indian bureaucracy forces Triumph and Bajaj to develop a new 350 range for next year

India has just announced your new GST 2.0 tax reform, in which mainly the arrival of two new tax sections to the motorcycle sector. These changes will force brands such as Triumph, and its local partner Bajaj Auto, to have to remodel its main bulwark for this market, the Modern Classic 400 rangecurrently composed of the SPEED 400, the Speed T4, the 400X Scrable and the Thruxton 400.

New Triumph range “Three and a half” in sight

In short, the new Indian fiscal reform will be included in two sections, as explained from some international media that have echoed the news:

  • Motorcycles of less than 350 cc in which the GST tax rate will go from 28 % to 18 %.
  • Motorcycles of more than 350 cc where the tax rate will become 40%.

Given such a commercial scenario, Triumph, by the hand of Bajaj Auto, must make an adjustment of displace equal to or less than 350 cc. Recall that currently the mounts of the British firm that are part of this segment are driven by a 398 cc monocylinder engine.

Called in internal TR code referring to the historic ‘Trophy’ nomenclature of Triumph, it is associated with a six -speed gearbox equipped with an antirrebote system, which sends the power to the posterior axis. Specifically, 42 hp at 9,000 rpm, and 37.5 nm of maximum torque to 7,500 laps in its newly released Thruxton 400.

In order to reach those desired 350 cc, everything indicates that Triumph already works in a reform of this propeller, reducing the diameter of its cylinder from the original 89 mm to the necessary 83 mmresulting in a cubicism around 349 cc. While we would lose bellows in the upper part of the account Vueltas, this change would make integers in the lower and middle part of the account.

With this panorama, Rajiv BajajGeneral Director and Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, has already announced that its expected range of 2026 models will be in line with the new Indian fiscal regulations. Similarly, the offer that Triumph currently offers in the country, within the aforementioned range 400, will be replaced gradually with the new “three and a half” models, being from the third quarter of next year when they are finally established within its borders.

Regarding the rest of the markets where Triumph markets its range 400, no a priori changes are expected, nor that the 350 cc variants that will be of vital commercial importance for the brand in India will arrive, even though it is unquestionable that they will be more economical than the current models.
