Suzuki has presented at the EICMA show in Milan the new Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SMtwo motorcycles completely renovated to comply with the standard Euro 5+ of emissions that come to take over from their predecessors.
Shortly after the original DR-Z400S debuted in 2000, it established itself as a popular model, earning high praise for its agile and precise handling, easy maneuverability and performance on any terrain.
Combining the power and torque of a compact 398cc liquid-cooled DOHC 4-stroke engine with a lightweight, agile chassis, the DR-Z400S helped lay the foundation for modern dual sport riding. Highly capable and fun to drive, it won the hearts of off-road enthusiasts both for use on forest tracks, open countryside and also for driving around the city.
With the arrival of the DR-Z400SM in 2005, Suzuki expanded the range by including a new road version that is fun to ride and ready to take on any urban or supermoto circuit. As popular as the DR-Z400S and DR-Z400SM have been, there were a number of countries where they no longer met the latest regulations.
This led enthusiasts of the model to ask for it to be updated to meet all the demands of today’s market. For this reason, Suzuki has developed the new DR-Z4S/SM, capable of meeting the Euro 5+ emissions standard, OBD II requirements, as well as the latest regulations regarding braking systems and noise.
Another important objective was to improve marketing by introducing advanced electronic driving assistance systems. Now included are the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), the Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) and an ABS (anti-lock braking system) that can be disengaged to suit the rider’s control preferences when riding on gravel and dirt.
And the third objective was to improve the visual appeal, which has been achieved with a modern design, LED lighting and complete LCD instrumentation. In addition, Suzuki has thoroughly revised the engine, designed a new frame and swingarm and updated every component and system to maximize performance, efficiency and visual appeal. The result is a performance motorcycle, easy to handle, reliable and fun, innate characteristics of this legendary saga.
Suzuki DR-Z4S
The Offroad variant of this saga is presented as a Dual Sport prepared for anything. The concept that the new DR-Z4S aims to convey is to take pilots wherever they want to go. To achieve this, the Japanese brand has equipped it with tires in sizes 80/100-21 at the front and 120/80-18 at the rear. The suspensions offer us ample travel, thanks to its inverted front fork and rear monoshock. With 280 and 296 mm between stops, respectively, it is capable of tackling any route on the most difficult terrain.
Other key aspects of this version are, for example, the use of disc brakes on both wheels or the high outlet of the exhaust system. It also has equipment elements such as a rear luggage rack or a hand guard kit. All of this dressed under two color schemes in line with the philosophy and purpose of the model.
Suzuki DR-Z4SM
The new DR-Z4SM provides us with a high level of performance and freedom thanks to a truly balanced and efficient package. Like its trail sister, the Supermoto version is equipped with the new DOHC 4-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with a displacement of 398 cc. As we mentioned at the beginning, this has been subjected to the necessary adjustments to be able to exceed the current Euro 5+ standard.
As a result we have a power of 38 HP at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 37 Nm at 6,500 revolutions. Obviously, this DR-Z4SM uses, unlike its sister, 17” wheels shod with tires measuring 120/70R and 140/70R, front and rear respectively. The suspension travel also changes, with 260 mm available at the front and 277 mm at the rear axle.
For now we do not know the launch date of the new Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM, nor their initial price. For more information you can consult the brand’s official website or visit any of the authorized distributors we have in our country.
