Drive backwards for 12 hours in a sidecar to break a Guinness record. This is the goal that the British adventurers have set for themselves. Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkesknown by the nickname “The Sidecar Guys,” to try to beat the current mark of 106 miles, 170 km. Furthermore, they will do it under the support of their audience who will join this biker party in just a few weeks.
The event will take place at the Tranwell airfield, Morpeth on 26 Octoberand as those involved in this challenge explain: “We, Matt and Reece, will continually circle the airfield in reverse on a Ural motorcycle (for approximately 10 to 12 hours), while our amazing team of guides will be on hand to take you on a ride or show you how to drive a sidecar.”
12 hours reversing in a sidecar for a good cause.
They continue: “We will also have our sidecar coffee machine on site for refreshments and then we will host a small party in the unit with a couple of beers to celebrate when we have made it into the record books in reverse.” A difficult task of 12 hours reversing in a sidecar to try to beat the current record.
This is in the hands of the Russian Vladimir Glukhikh which in 1992 traveled 171 km and 200 meters in reverse to set the longest record ever achieved on a motorcycle with a sidecar. It took him just over eight hours to cover that distance and since then, more than 30 years ago, no one had considered trying to unseat Glukhikh from his personal record in this modality.
The money raised from tickets to this very particular event will be used to open a new cafeteria and center for adventurous travelers in the northeast of the country. “The Sidecar Guys” have been taking scooter and sidecar trips around the world for several years.
They currently hold the official Guinness World Record for the longest trip by scooter and sidecar, with 34,000 miles traveled across 35 countries and 5 continents.
