Cinema and motorcycles are something that have historically gone hand in hand, although until now we had not had a film promoted by the championship itself, and that film is Idols. With a story that begins 10 years ago, when Jordi Gasull had in mind to make a documentary, the project has grown and will culminate on January 23, the day that Ídolos will hit movie screens.
But until reaching the cinema the process, as we say, has been long. In addition to starting with an idea that Manel Arroyo de Dorna himself shaped to give rise to the feature film that can be seen, the recording took place over 10 weeks visiting different locations, which include the COTA, Misano, Montmeló, Jerez and MotorLand World Cup circuits, in addition to having the collaboration of the Aspar Team.
And the Valencian team captained by Aspar is also a protagonist, since Óscar Casas receives the opportunity to race with them, with Enrique Arce as team leader, Claudio Santamaría as his father and Ana Mena as the love bond.
Ídolos was born looking for a Spanish-style “Days of Thunder”
A story that mixes MotoGP with a complicated personal plot between father and son, and in which Mena is also intertwined to finish giving a touch to the “Days of Thunder”, which was precisely what Arroyo asked of Gasull when he presented the project to him.
For now we can only see the trailer, and we will have to wait for January 23 to arrive to see the entire film. While we can stay, in addition to this presentation, with the words of Mat Whitecross and Jordi Gasull himself.
Mat Whitecross: “Every day was an adventure. We were filming against the backdrop of one of the most epic and dangerous sports in the world. But our actors, crew and studio were 100% committed to this film; without that, we would never have been able to overcome the obstacles in our path. We were incredibly lucky to attract the talents of Oscar Casas, Claudio Santamaría, Ana Mena and Enrique Arce as our cast. When filming wrapped, I think we all knew we had captured something very special.”
Jordi Gasull: “I started ‘Ídolos’ 10 years ago and in a totally unexpected way. I wanted to make a documentary about the risky life of a rider. What makes them go at top speeds of more than 360 km/h and get up again and again after spectacular falls in which they really risk their lives. In my interview with Dorna, Manel Arroyo, who at that time was in charge of the audiovisuals of the MotoGP promotion company, told me: ‘Forget about documentaries. You You make good movies, why don’t you bring me a Days of Thunder on Motorcycles? This is how the long process of Ídolos was born, where, thanks to Dorna, I was able to learn what the life of a pilot is like over eight years. In that process I was not alone, Inma Cánovas has been my faithful companion on that very long journey of writing Ídolos.”
The film is produced by different companies in the sector, among which Warner Bros stands out, with the collaboration of MotoGP and with the participation of RTVE.
