The adventure range bmw of the F Series for this season has introduced two completely renewed models: the BMW F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure. As the most notable novelty, the Germans have equipped them with a new and efficient mechanical heart that is highly evolved and, of course, equipped with many secrets… As you can imagine, traveling the world has never been so easy. Now we explain why.
As we are telling you, bmw has significantly expanded its mid-range touring enduro lineup with the introduction of models, F 900 GS, F 900 GS Adventure. By the way, they have also presented a renewed BMW F 800 GS, a motorcycle that is postulated as the perfect ally for the less experienced. In fact, the F 800 GS is the ideal basic model also equipped with a new, more powerful engine, and new standard equipment.
Our two protagonists, the F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure, of course, come to the market standing out for their suitability for long-distance adventure trips and intense tours around the world. In fact, they have been thoroughly updated, now offering a higher level of standard equipment and the aforementioned completely new engine.
In fact, the F 900 GS They incorporate numerous innovations, greatly expanding their versatility. Thanks to its improved off-road capabilities and a notable weight reduction of 14 kg compared to its predecessor, it establishes itself as a particularly sporty model within the F Series.
Advanced mechanics of the BMW F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure
Powered by a revolutionary in-line twin-cylinder engine, the new bmw They offer a highly dynamic driving experience. This engine, which debuted in 2018 with the F 850 GShas now been optimized with a larger displacement of 895 cc (previously 853 cc), enhancing both strength and mechanical response.
The unique engine design with a 270/450 degree firing pattern emits an exciting and distinctive sound. In terms of performance, the F 900 GS reach 77 kW (105 hp) and have a maximum torque of 93 Nm. These engines not only achieve a significant increase in maximum power of 10 HP, but also stand out for offering more consistent torque, better traction and better acceleration.
Both F 900 GS They benefit from the 895 cc parallel twin engine with dry sump and counterweight. This improved F-series propeller achieves an increase in power, thanks to a diameter increased by 2 mm and a stroke of 77 mm. The new forged pistons increase the compression of the air-fuel mixture, provided by electronic fuel injection, to a ratio of 13:1, something that normally requires premium gasoline.
Nevertheless, bmw has implemented advanced technology to control detonation and allow the use of lower octane fuels. In addition, the 270/450 degree ignition pattern, as we mentioned above, gives the new mid-range trails a distinctive and robust sound, similar to that of 90-degree V-twin engines.
This advanced mechanics offers smooth and dynamic operation, thanks to counterbalanced shafts and dry sump. Two counterbalance shafts, one in front and one behind the crankshaft, eliminate vibrations. Furthermore, to avoid unwanted losses and ensure maximum operational safety, the engine has a dry sump lubrication system that does not require a separate engine oil tank. Thus, the two overhead camshafts, driven by a toothed chain, rotate in the cylinder head and drive four valves per cylinder through lightweight and therefore speed-resistant valves.
To cover a wider range of available fuel qualities, i.e. octane, the new F 900 GS They are equipped with an effective and innovative selective cylinder detonation control. The revised oxygen sensor, together with the catalytic converter, ensures more efficient control of exhaust gases and allows a greater range of fuel use without loss of performance. Something especially important when we travel through countries with lower quality gasoline.
The clutch, as standard, is of the slipper type and not only ensures low operating forces on the adjustable clutch lever, but also increases safety by reducing the engine drag torque, especially when braking and downshifting at the same time. To shift up and down without having to use the clutch, bmw offers Gear Shift Assist Pro as an option.
To satisfy the preferences of each pilot, the new F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure They come equipped with two standard driving modes: «Rain” and “road«. In addition, they include dynamic traction control (DTC) as standard, which provides a high level of driving safety. Of course, they can also be customized with the optional Riding Modes Pro, which adds “dynamic” and “Enduro“, as well as “EnduroPro«.
Riding Modes Pro allow riders to configure up to four riding modes, which can be assigned to buttons on the right handlebar. As a novelty, the Riding Modes Pro incorporate engine drag torque control, further improving drivability.
