A month ago, the Superbike World Cup started in Australia and did so with the overwhelming domain of Nicolo Bulega and his Ducati Panigale V4. Such was the superiority of the Italian and the rest of the Ducati, that a frustrated Toprak Razgatlioglu did not hesitate to affirm that he would leave the championship if the thing continued like this.
And it is that Ducati’s superiority in Australia was striking, but more recently much of the WSBK caravan moved up to Portimao, the same scenario in which the Portuguese round will be played this weekend. And there it was again Toprak who dominated seemed to find those tenths that perhaps did not have in Phillip Island.
So, after all the preseason, the first round and this test between races, instead of being certain what there are many doubts about what can happen in Portimao. Surely the Ducati increase their rhythm on the weekend of competition, but Toprak and their BMW surely do so and it is possible that we see an intense struggle on the Portuguese layout.
So we will have to be attentive, because it is also true that part of the preseason and the tests of a few days ago, have been marked by the rain. But everything indicates that there will be a stable meteorologically speaking weekend, with relatively warm temperatures. Precisely this last point can also influence the performance of some mounts, such as the Honda, which seems not to work in the same way when temperatures rise.
There is no doubt that the characteristics of the International Autodromo do Algarve, the official name of the track that we all know as Portimao, is very different from Phillip Island and also to the rest of the circuits that the WSBK visits during the season and that is always an extra in terms of show.
Details of the International Autodromo do Algarve
As we had mentioned above, Portimao’s is a peculiar route inside the calendar and almost the international scene. Of the modern circuits it is one of the most “old school”, that is, the orography of the land was used to give it its peculiar character.
We could consider that we are facing a track mainly from right -wing curves for the number, nine in front of the six left, but in addition to those right -wing curves there are several that are key such as 1 and 2 and 15, perhaps the three most spectacular points of the path. Although, yes, one of the most critical points is undoubtedly curve 5. It is a left -wing fork, in which it is overtaking it is as simple as making mistakes and going to the ground.
The entire area that arrives from that curve 5 is also impressive, with a succession of spectacular curves and the famous grounding change between eight and nine, a curve that prepares without seeing it and when you get to it the work has to be done. After that comes the last section of the circuit with directly or indirectly linked curves and all this with the continuous level changes that make this layout located to the south of Portugal one of the most spectacular of the WSBK.
