Yamaha patents a system for their electric motorcycles to vibrate and sound like one of gasoline

The arrival of electric motorcycles raises a dilemma for many users. Although instant acceleration and silence are advantages for some, others miss the sensations that accompany a thermal engine: the escape noise, the response when opening gas and those vibrations, intrinsic to any combustion engine, which run through the motorcycle and the pilot’s body. Yamaha does not want that connection to be lost.

The patent, registered under the name of “Saddle-Randing Type Electric Vehicle”describes an ingenious system in which a false piston moves inside a cylinder driven by a linear engine. This movement generates real vibrations and allows both admission and air escape to simulate, thus reproducing noise and sensations very similar to those of a four -stroke combustion engine.

Yamaha thinks of a simulated engine to supply the lack of sensations

In other words, as Rideapart’s colleagues tell, Yamaha proposes to provide their electric motorcycles with a “simulated engine” that does not produce emissions, but offers the sound and tactile experience of a conventional motorcycle. The idea responds, according to the patent itself, to the desire of many users who support the reduction of CO₂ emissions, but at the same time they do not want to give up what makes a motorcycle unique in front of an electric car: the sensory experience.

Although it is not yet known if this system will reach production, the truth is that it opens an interesting debate in the world of two wheels: is the future of electric motorcycle to offer absolute silence, or to recreate the sensations that have fallen in love with generations of motorists? Yamaha seems to be clear about his answer.
