Royal Enfield and Roland Sands resurrect the superbike spirit of the 80s with this spectacular Reload 650

The One Motorcycle Show 2026 was the setting chosen by Roland Sands Design for the presentation of its latest preparation in collaboration with Royal Enfield: the Reload 650. Based on the versatile Shotgun 650, the American specialist has been inspired by the retro superbikes of the 1980s, managing to complete a simple machine with clean lines, equipped with functional components and a minimalist silhouette.

However, the multitude of details that make up this striking Reload 650 allow us to glimpse a corollary of nuances that come together in search of a unique personality. Furthermore, from the very beginning the goal was not only to achieve good aesthetics, but also to create a motorcycle that could be built, tested, ridden and that could be trusted.

Roland Sands commented: “Thank you to Royal Enfield for trusting me to build this bike and allowing me to work on all these parts. I think we have created an interesting proposition for this machine and for the potential of the Royal Enfield 650 platform. This is just one of the infinite possibilities that this model offers.”

Regarding the latter, an idea flowed clearly from the first stages of the project: instead of treating the Shotgun 650 as a blank canvas for unique customization, the objective was to fully explore the platform and discover its potential. This involved working directly with Royal Enfield’s engineering department to develop parts that reflected Roland Sands Design’s signature style.

In parallel, it had to meet the real demands of production, fit, safety and ease of driving. In terms of design, the rear end evokes the golden era of AMA Superbike racing in the 1980s. This racing influence extends through the rest of the Reload 650’s silhouette.

The repertoire of RSD components inspired by competition, such as the S&S 2 in 1 exhaust, helps create this racing atmosphere with clear Old School overtones; front and rear suspension upgraded with Öhlins components; Morris five-spoke wheels of our own design and a marked vintage style or the set of gear levers and footpegs specific for the occasion.

The finished motorcycle more than meets that objective thanks to a tailored driving position where the ideal balance between comfort and sportiness was sought: “I wanted to give it a retro 80s superbike feel”says Roland. “We got a really comfortable and attractive driving position, but we also gave it a touch of personality.”

On the other hand, to complement the retro aesthetic, some engine parts feature a finned design, a nod to the hot rodding culture of Southern California. Risers have been used to allow straight mounting of wide handlebars, and a unique front fender support, made of one-piece aluminum, also functions as a fender reinforcement, improving rigidity.

Roland has described the bike as “an iteration of an infinite variety of ideas that could be applied to the machine.” It’s not just a custom Royal Enfield, but a proof of concept of what the 650 platform can be with the right vision. “I think we have created an interesting business case for this machine”Roland said.

Concludes: “What this Royal Enfield 650 platform can do and what it can become… this is just one of the infinite possibilities that can be posed to this machine.” In this way, the Reload 650 becomes Royal Enfield’s second custom collaboration with RSD, after the acclaimed Super Meteor 650 Chopper of 2023 and will be present at numerous motor shows throughout 2026.
