Autoliv patents a motorcycle airbag capable of “hugging” the rider when he is thrown

For a few years now, motorcycle airbag devices have constantly evolved thanks to the introduction of new technologies with which to achieve better efficiency in terms of safety. Autoliv is one of the companies that has become a main actor in this interesting and necessary process, thanks to different patents and systems aimed at their evolution.

New Autoliv airbag system in detail

The last of these innovative ideas from Autoliv’s R&D department gives a new twist to the evolution of its motorcycle airbag. To do this, they have created a system associated with the operation of the stock market itself that It is capable of releasing it from the handlebar itself once deployed. The idea is that the rider, in the event of an impact, is completely enveloped by the airbag once off the motorcycle.

Previously, we were familiar with the general design of this type of airbag capable of enveloping the rider thanks to its shapes. These would wrap around the driver’s torso and head, also preventing the airbag from interfering with control of the motorcycle. Likewise, in line with this device, the Swedish brand already filed a patent in 2021 that could be directly related to the latter.

Then he showed us a system designed so that the handlebar, in the event of a collision, would break or disconnect from the steering plate, with the intention that it would not impact the pilot in a hypothetical situation of this type. However, the complexity of the system gave us something to think about and what could happen if the mechanism failed. That is, if the handlebar were to detonate in full gear and the consequences resulting from this.

What is undeniable is Autoliv’s determination in terms of developing new systems within this sector, each one more elaborate and efficient. We have undeniable proof of this approach with its innovative airbag for urban scooters, recently released in the 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300. In addition, the brand has also focused its efforts on implementing other devices related to the safety of bikers, either autonomously or in collaboration with other leading companies in the sector.

A clear example of this strategic positioning can be found at the end of 2022 when Airoh, in collaboration with Autoliv, presented its concept helmet with integrated airbag at EICMA, based on technology inspired by the work of the young engineer. Roberta Descrovi.

Finally, this year, the Swedish firm has registered a new patent where they are committed to applying the technology of car seat belts to the straps of motorcycle helmets. A risky idea about which we will probably have new details very soon.
