Furion presents its new Taran, a madness with two-wheel drive

“We reinvented the wheel. Eversor recovers braking energy where it is really produced: at the front. A patented architecture for electric mobility, designed and developed at Le Mans.” This is how Furion’s latest official statement begins regarding its latest engineering “invention” within the two-wheeled sector: Taran.

Taran is the abbreviation of Taranisthe Celtic god of thunder. Under the guidance and artistic direction of Pigment Agency, a design agency specialized in mobility, Takumi Yamamotodesigner of the GT by Citroën, brought Furion’s vision to life. This collaboration brings together designers with more than twenty-five years of experience, from automobiles and motorcycles to boats and aeronautics.

As the main claim, making use of its already well-known technological platform, we have a axial flux motor directly on the front wheel capable of recovering up to 77% energy during braking. Furthermore, unlike the rest of his concepts, The Taran uses exclusively electric drive, with a motor located on each axle. The result is “a high-end motorcycle… that demonstrates what this architecture allows.”

In search of the right architecture

After the official presentation this year of “Furion F1: all-wheel drive, electric regeneration and up to 300 km of hybrid autonomy”, the French brand returns with an ambitious project that not only focuses on finding innovative solutions within the two-wheeled electric sector. It also exposes, under the criteria of its creators, what are the main technical obstacles faced by current plug-in motorcycle models.

Regarding the latter they state: “The market does not have problems with the battery. It has problems with an architecture designed for cars, transposed as is to two wheels”. They also summarize in three points what are the main reasons why the motorcycle fan is not usually interested (at the moment) in the electrified segment:

  • The autonomy barrier: The market expects 200 km. Current models reach a maximum of 150. Between the two, a psychological barrier that no one has overcome.
  • The lost pleasure: For a motorcyclist, pleasure is non-negotiable. Current electric motorcycles are fast and lack personality. You cannot convert a passionate motorcyclist with a purely financial argument.
  • Parallel innovations: Major manufacturers are actively patenting in this area. None yet have the complete solution to convert motorcyclists.

Furion Taran: “the first machine equipped with Eversor”

Faced with this crossroads, they propose their new Furion Taran, a futuristic design that announces final figures within the reach of very few motorcycles, regardless of the type of propulsion they use: 240 KW of power, 23 kilos of weight and a range in real conditions of at least 200 kilometers.

Not only that, they also claim that it has more than 11% agility, in dynamic simulation, with respect to a model with similar characteristics. This is thanks to having two-wheel drive (2WD), calibrated by software.

All of this is the result of combining four key aspects of the design itself:

  • Axial flux motor: very compact, with high power density, integrated directly into the front wheel. It is this choice of location, and not an efficiency improvement, that unlocks everything else.
  • Gyroscopic counter-rotation: the motor rotates in the opposite direction to the wheel. The gyroscopic effect is no longer passive: it becomes a controlled parameter. The machine feels lighter under the rider and quicker in turns.
  • Energy recovery during braking: during braking, the load moves forward. This is basic physics, and it is precisely where current designs fail. Eversor captures energy where it really flows.
  • Comprehensive 2WD architecture: wheels the propulsion is distributed between the two wheels and is controlled by precise software. Traction becomes a matter of electronic control, not mechanical engagement.

In any case, as stated by Furion, the brand has no intention of starting large-scale production of the model. It is currently developing the Taran to launch a small series on the market with which to demonstrate the power of its technology. Later they would focus on granting the production license of their Eversor system to those manufacturers and equipment suppliers interested in the project.
