Friends of Bike Urious recently attended the Aprilia Racers Days at the Circuit of the Americas and there they found, among others, this incredible DR Moto. A completely handmade preparation, around the engine of the Yamaha R1 with Superbike specifications for the 2014 season.
Rather, we are looking at a true “circuit tool”, closer to a MotoGP from the middle of the last decade than to a sports car prepared to the teeth, as we might initially believe.
Yamaha YZF-R1 DR Moto, a high-standing replica-race
Jensen Beeler CEO of Krämer Motorcycles USA explains in a detailed article about this DR Moto, which he wrote shortly after the brand announced the project:
“The jewel in Yamaha's crown is presented as a brand that is difficult to beat when someone is looking for something “more” in design. However, DR Moto might have that answer for track enthusiasts who want something closer to what they'll see on Sunday race day, without the compromises that come with production/street machines.”
And continues: “With over 200 horsepower from its BSB Superbike engine, the true beauty of the DR Moto is its custom chassis; as it should be, since behind the project is the British engineering firm Reynolds Engineering, which supplies parts to the BSB, WSBK and MotoGP teams, along with Barry Ward, who worked with Kenny Roberts Sr.'s MotoGP team. For 150,000 dollars, the DR Moto is not for everyone…”.
Undoubtedly, we are facing a true gem of engineering that has an endless list of “black leg” equipment only reserved for preparations of this caliber, or directly mounts that compete in some high-level championship. If we go into the details, this DR Moto equips, among others:
- Chassis designed and built to MotoGP specifications
- Adjustable geometry (wheelbase from 1402 mm to 1452 mm)
- CNC manufactured swingarm
- CNC magnesium front suspension clamps
- Ohlins FG 386 CRT fork with MotoGP specification.
- Ohlins ttx36 shock absorber with MotoGP specification.
- Marchesini forged magnesium wheels in 16.5”
- 4-piston monobloc Brembo calipers
- 320mm carbon discs, etc.
The party continues with a body in the image and likeness of the MotoGP that Rossi and Lorenzo rode in 2013/14 in the MotoGP World Championship, with a body made entirely of carbon fiber, reducing the front surface to the maximum in order to improve the straight line performance.
Finally, we have the mechanics, with specifications inherited directly from the 2014 Yamaha R1, with which the brand competed in the World Superbike. More than 200 HP of power delivered to the rear wheel through a six-speed, close-ratio gearbox.
Electronic management is carried out by a Motec M1 control unit and includes traction control systems, anti-wheelie, electronic accelerator with tilt sensor, etc. A true career-client that shines for its effectiveness and that halo of exclusivity that it carries in every detail.
