Through our colleagues at Ride Apart we have learned about one of those situations that occur more frequently than one would like, but in this case it involves a motorized agent. It is the typical rear-end accident, something common on merging roads or roundabouts, as a result of not looking at the vehicle in front of us.
In this particular case we have a video, recorded by a dash cam, which shows a motorcycle police officer apparently gesturing for a driver to stop. But before the driver can do so, the police officer collides from behind with the car in front of him.

It all happens on a busy road, where it is not uncommon for vehicles to slow down unexpectedly. This is clearly not the place where you would want to drive without paying full attention to the road and what is happening in front of you. And this is precisely what the traffic officer seems to forget.
Considering that police vehicles are equipped with lights and therefore also have a siren, we would like to know what was the motive that made the police officer try to stop the vehicle by gesturing with his hand. Even if the motive was another, such as trying to alert the driver about a problem in order to help him, again it seems to us that he did not make the best decision.
Although it is always easy to say it after the fact from a keyboard, what is not so easy is to be there day after day, shift after shift, fighting in the traffic, enforcing the rules and looking after the drivers. We are all human and we make mistakes.
