We expected it. After the presentation of the Audi A3 Sportback 2024, the range was completed with a sports version, the S3 and a clean variant was missing. It is the Audi A3 Sportback TFSIea plug-in hybrid that does not give up power and performance, while announcing 141 km of electric range. It is available from 46,230 euros and orders start in October 2024.
The propulsion system combines a turbocharged gasoline engine, the 1.5 TFSI evo2 (previously the 1.4 TFSI) with turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and operating in the Miller cycle, with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor with 85 kW and 330 Nm of torque. This is integrated into the crankcase of the six-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, which transfers torque from the two motors to the front axle.
The third element is the high voltage battery with 25.7 kWh (19.7 kWh net) capacity, almost double that of its predecessor, with almost identical dimensions. It is made up of 96 prismatic cells, divided into four modules and a renewed chemistry so that the electric range reaches 141 km in the WLTP cycle. It has a specific cooling circuit to maintain the temperature in the optimal range.
Audi A3 Sportback TFSIe. Versions
With these wickers, the A3 Sportback TFSIe is offered two power levels. Both can reach 140 km/h in 100% electric mode, but there are notable differences:
- 40TFSIe: The combustion engine has a power of 110 kW (150 HP) and 250 Nm of torque. The total combined power is 150 kW (204 hp) and 350 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225 km/h.
- 45TFSIe: the 1.5 TFSI evo2 engine reaches 130 kW (177 HP) and 250 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. Combined with the electric motor, the system power is 200 kW (272 hp) and 400 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 237 km/h.
The start is always in electric mode (unless the outside temperature is below -28º) and then the driver can choose how to move:
- EV: electric mode, selecting it by pressing the button or with the MMI control.
- Auto Hybrid: both motors share the work intelligently: electric for low speeds, TFSI motor at higher speeds and, often, both together.
- hold: maintains the battery charge level for later use.
When braking, the electric motor assumes deceleration of up to 0.3 G and can recover up to 43 kW of power. The paddles behind the steering wheel are now used to vary the recovery level in EV mode. But it’s not all about consumption: in the S mode of the transmission, all the power is released (up to 40 kW for a few seconds) by pressing the pedal.
One of the great news is that fast charging is offered in direct current with up to 50 kW (goes from 10 to 80% capacity in half an hour), in addition to charging 11 KW in alternating current (2.5 hours to complete the charging process) Audi charging gives access to 630,000 charging points in 29 European countries, with a single card.
The weight of the battery (located under the rear seat bench) has forced a specific tuning of the chassis. Suspension and shock absorbers have a somewhat sportier adjustment. Progressive steering is optional, which modifies the reduction depending on the angle of rotation of the
steering wheel.
Audi A3 Sportback TFSIe. Equipment
- A3 Sportback 40 TFSIe: from the Advanced edition it has 17-inch alloy wheels, Audi drive select dynamic driving system or stationary air conditioning. The Audi virtual cockpit shows power meter with new graphics, requested power, driving mode, battery charge status and range. From 46,230 euros.
- A3 Sportback 45 TFSIe: standard 18-inch wheels in Audi Sport design finished in black, as well as the S line exterior line, with S-specific radiator grille or the S spoiler on the roof edge. The black plus aesthetic package highlights the Audi Singleframe, the side window trims and the bumpers. Exterior mirror housings also shine in black and the Audi rings are anthracite gray. There is no lack of red brake calipers and darkened rear windows as standard. Inside, sports seats with black upholstery, aluminum finish moldings, such as the door sills. From 54,430 euros.
