Bajaj enters the battle of electric motorcycles: its first model already has a date

Bajaj Auto has set a date for one of his next big moves. The Indian company will launch its first electric motorcycle during fiscal year 2028, which will begin in April 2027, with the intention of expanding an electric offensive that until now has relied primarily on the scooter family. Chetak and in its 3-wheeled electric vehicles, commonly called “tuk tuk“By the way, ultra popular machines in the country in the world with the most population.

The announcement comes at a particularly favorable time for the electrical division of Bajajwhich is growing strongly in its domestic market. The company also recognizes that the demand for Chetak is exceeding the available capacity, so it is preparing an increase in monthly production to be able to serve more customers.

Furthermore, the strategy brings with it a very interesting context. Although Bajaj has historically been one of the great motorcycle manufacturers in India, its entry into the electric 2-wheeler market has initially occurred through a legendary company name: Chetak. The brand has managed to place it among the references in the Indian electric scooter market, with a share of 20.7% in fiscal year 2026 and more than 700,000 units accumulated since the launch of the new electric generation.

An electric motorcycle that will arrive in fiscal year 2028

As we are telling you, the main novelty announced by Bajaj is the arrival of a completely new electric motorcycle. The Indians have confirmed that its launch is planned for fiscal year 2028, which places its arrival on the market from April 2027 and, predictably, at some point during that year.

For now, Bajaj It has not offered information about its design, power, autonomy, features or price. Nor has it confirmed whether it will use a platform derived from the technology used in the Chetak or whether it will be a specific development for the electric motorcycle segment. The enormous Indian secrecy is one of its great pillars of development in the face of the growing and excessive Chinese competition.

It is a very important strategic decision. While the Indian electric 2-wheeler market is mainly dominated by scooters, the electric motorcycle segment still has a much smaller presence. Bajaj It could precisely take advantage of that space to differentiate itself from manufacturers that have focused a good part of their investments on electric scooters.

The company will, however, find itself with increasingly prepared competition. Manufacturers like TVS Engine and Hero MotoCorpin addition to electrical specialists such as Ather Energyare increasing their presence in the zero emissions market. The arrival of Bajaj to the electric motorcycle segment, therefore, promises to further raise the technological and commercial rivalry in India.

Chetak needs to produce more units

On the other hand, while preparing his first electric motorcycle, Bajaj Auto continues to bet heavily on Chetak. Demand for the scooter has grown to the point that the company recognizes that production capacity has become one of the main limits to its expansion. The monthly production of Chetakcurrently standing at around 50,000 units, will increase to approximately 60,000 units in the coming months. The goal is to reduce supply constraints and take advantage of the growth the brand is experiencing.
