Registrations of new cars closed the year 2024 a total of 1,016,885 units7.1% more than in 2023. This figure allows us to consecutively surpass the barrier of one million units, which has not been reached since 2019, before the start of the pandemic.
Part of the blame for achieving this milestone lies in the good performance of the market in December, when increases of 28.8% were recorded compared to the same month in 2023 (105,346 units). It is the first time since there are records that it becomes the best month of the year in registrations, highlighting sales to individuals and renters.
By channels, it has been precisely the good performance of the market aimed at individuals, companies and renters in the last month that has been fundamental in exceeding one million units at the end of the year. Specifically, sales to individuals, in the total for the year, have reached 456,993 units, 8.9% more. Likewise, renters obtained 186,126 units, with an increase of 36.8%. For their part, companies reached 373,826 units, with a slight decline of 5.1%.
Pluggable market
Regarding sales of electrified passenger cars (BEV+PHEV) they ended the year 2024 positively, with a total of 115,939 units, which means a increase of 1.9%, well below the market as a whole. December closed with a 14.4% share but in the accumulated annual figure they barely represented 11.4% of the total, six tenths below 2023, when they reached 12%.
The average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in December remain at 112.2 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled. For the year as a whole, the average is 116.4 g/CO2 per km traveled, 0.5% lower than in 2023.
From ANFAC they applaud having surpassed one million units and the good performance of sales in the last quarter driven: «We continue on the path of recovering the sales volume of 1.2 million units. To achieve this, it is necessary to maintain the aid plans for the purchase of electrified vehicles.” The Faconauto dealer association indicates that it has noticed “the effect of the park renewal plans of many autonomous communities and the extraordinary operations in the Valencian Community.” They point to the challenge that in 2025 they seek to sell 25% of electric vehicles to avoid fines or stop selling up to 175,000 combustion vehicles, “which would weaken the national market and make it go backwards.”
Ganvam highlights the good performance of the market in December, “better than expected.” Looking ahead to 2025, they point out the importance of “promoting the rejuvenation of the park. The extension of MOVES is positive, but it is necessary to launch a new direct aid scheme at the national level that improves the effectiveness of the current one.”
