When we analyzed the registrations for 2024, we already said that sales of electrified cars did not match the general increase in the passenger car market. In fact, when sales in 2024 of all electrified vehicles (passenger cars, quadricycles, commercial and industrial vehicles and buses) are analyzed, they have decreased by 0.4% compared to 2023, with 125,185 units.
The majority of these sales, nine out of ten, corresponded to passenger cars, which indicates that perhaps it would be necessary to think about purchase aid plans for all types of vehicles, including heavy ones (without an incentive plan for the purchase of passenger models). zero and low emissions).
In the table below we see how the sales of all types of vehicles in Spain have ended. Pure gasoline cars are falling, surpassed for the first time by conventional hybrids.

Diesel, towards the disappearance in passenger cars
If we focus on passenger cars, we observe that diesel is already a practically residual fuel in registrations. It falls below 10% of the total, surpassed by the sum of electric and plug-in hybrids.

The latter, the PHEVs, seem to have not quite caught on in the Spanish market, despite the fact that really interesting alternatives have arrived in recent months. We will have to see the next evolution, but the fact that there are no alternatives in segment B will end up hindering its sales. In this video we analyze when they are of interest:
The best seller, the Mercedes GLC, which has a diesel plug-in hybrid alternative. Behind him, the Ford Kuga and the CUPRA Formentor. The Mercedes GLA and the Hyundai Tucson complete the top five positions.
The 11.17% increase in electric passenger cars, above the market, is a good fact. The best-selling electric car in Spain is the Tesla Model 3, whose sales in 2024 were practically two in 10, with an increase of 80% compared to the previous year. It can be said that the increase in electric vehicles has fallen entirely on him.
It is followed by the Tesla Model Y and the MG 4. After them, premium cars such as the Volvo EX30, the BMW iX1 or the MINI already appear.
In the total for the year, sales of electrified passenger cars total 115,932 units, which allows us to close 2024 with an increase of 1.9%. Despite this increase, electrified sales represent 11.4% of the market, which places it 6 tenths below the previous year’s figure, which stood at 12%.
The reign of the hybrids
Regarding the registrations of total alternative vehicles (electrified, hybrid and gas), with 555,218 units and an increase of 20.2%, they are positioned as the preferred option in Spain. Of this type of vehicles, conventional hybrids are the best-selling technology, surpassing gasoline and diesel vehicles. In this video we analyze the reasons for its success and the different alternatives on the market:
The Toyota Corolla is the one preferred by the Spanish, followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross. The Nissan Qashqai completes the podium, with the Toyota C-HR and the Kia Sportage below.
We were quite surprised by the 27.26% increase in car registrations. gas cars (mainly LPG), where the Dacia Sandero and the Dacia Jogger dominate. In this video we analyze the advantages of these bifuel models:
From ANFAC, the manufacturers’ association, they indicate that “2024 ends with a slight increase in the electrified market compared to the previous year, exceeding 115,000 units. It should also be noted that the market share continues to remain around 11%, lower than the previous year. A figure that will need to increase significantly to meet the emissions reduction requirements set by the CAFE regulations for 2025.”
“From the sector we positively value the continuity of MOVES aid until June 30, 2025. A necessary measure that sends a message of certainty to citizens to make the leap to electrified vehicles with aid of up to €7,000 for passenger cars and €9,000 in light commercial vehicles, as well as with the continuity of the 15% personal income tax deduction for the acquisition of electrified vehicles. “It is an important step to avoid paralyzing the electrified market, the objectives are increasingly more demanding and now is the perfect time to advance towards electrification.”
