Andrea Dovizioso's career has not been easy. From 125 to MotoGP he has been competing against some of the best riders in history. Valentino Rossi, Marc Márquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa have been the rocks he has had to encounter along the way.
Even so, Dovizioso managed to find his moment, and in addition to winning his 125 title and fighting for the 250 title first and then MotoGP, in his sporting career he was able to add 24 victories, 103 podiums and 20 pole positions in 346 races. Furthermore, once he retired he was named a MotoGP Legend, so he has credentials.
Perhaps that is why his retirement, before the end of the 2022 season, after a practically blank 2021 and with that last season without great results, was not at the level that we all expected from the Italian. In any case, what Dovizioso did leave us and left for himself was the fame of being a rider who had contributed to the development of the Ducati that we have today.
That is why from the first moment after his first retirement, forced in that case as he had no place in Ducati, he even tried the Aprilia and his role as a test rider was considered. Even after finishing in 2022 he sounded like a test driver, something that he did not happen to be.
However, now, after a time away from competition and dedicated to motocross, Andrea Dovizioso is ready to return to MotoGP. He would do it as a test driver and as he himself recognized during the Italian GP last week, it seems that there is a brand that he is interested in.
Dovizioso's options to return are several
Dovi is one of the few riders who has joined MotoGP as different from each other as Yamaha, Honda, Ducati and, to a lesser extent, Aprilia. Therefore, he could be a great help for any brand. Although it is unknown which brand he knocked on Andrea's door, rumors suggest that it could be Yamaha, where Cal Crutchlow is currently.
Even Ducati or Aprilia could be Dovizioso's destination despite the fact that they currently have Pirro and Savadori respectively. What does seem ruled out is that he would be part of the KTM group, which has Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaró, or HRC, which has Stefan Bradl in its ranks and where rumors suggest that Aleix Espargaró could arrive.
Thus, there are many options to see Dovizioso back in MotoGP, even if it is in the role of test rider and, who knows, if the time comes to see him again on the grid. If he does so, he would be the third MotoGP Legend after Hayden and Pedrosa to compete again. Although in his case, as in that of the Spaniard, it would be after retirement and not as in the case of Nicky who was still active but in another championship.
