Our readers, the Yamaha Y-AMT range and a great day
Five lucky people were able to test the Tracer 9, Tracer 7, MT-09, MT-07 and MT-07 35kW during a full day on a beautiful and curvy route through the Sierra del Rincón. They also left their impressions on video.
There is no year without SoyMotero Experience; Sometimes we even celebrate more than one per season. It’s not just a way to reward our readers. It also helps us to see another point of view, that is, to be able to see the technological advances that occur in our world from another perspective: that of the fan who, once he values the novelties, can become a final consumer.
The introduction of different exchange rates by manufacturers fuels the curiosity of readers. Throughout 2025 and 2026, Yamaha has been introducing its Y-AMT gearbox in its most representative models: Tracer 9, Tracer 7, MT-09, MT-07 (we leave you a link to all the tests). We wanted to bring them all and, representing the A2 card, the 35 kW Yamaha MT-07 Y-AMT. In total there are five models for five lucky readers. On behalf of SoyMotero, my partner Sara Román signed up for the route on the back of a Tracer 7 with a standard gearbox, and myself on the back of a Tracer 9, also standard, so that our readers could compare the models with Y-AMT gearbox with their counterparts with a clutch lever.
If you notice, at no time have I wanted to use the term “automatic transmission” because, although it may work like a conventional automatic transmission, in essence it is a system of two servos that operate the equivalent of the clutch lever and the gear lever respectively. The electronics are in charge of handling the rest, also allowing it to operate in manual mode, operating the gears with the thumb and index finger of the left hand.
The Y-AMT is an option within Yamaha’s naked and sport tourism range, with the certainty that it will be expanded to other models and that, although traditional changes will not disappear, just as in the world of cars, they will be displaced by systems that eliminate the user’s activation of the clutch from the equation.
Testers for a day
It’s not a way of speaking. At the SoyMotero Experience we wanted to replicate the presentations we attend to learn about new models or, as in this case, the Y-AMT system. In this case, with the added advantage of being able to test the Y-AMT gearbox on five models from the Yamaha range and being able to compare them with the Tracer 7 and Tracer 9 conventional gearboxes that my partner Sara and I were using.
Taking advantage of the fact that the mornings are still cool in mid-June, we met our testers very early at the SoyMotero offices, where we were able to have breakfast and explain the system we were going to test, the Y-AMT, both on the screen inside the office and on top of the motorcycles before starting the route.
As in the presentations, the explanation included a safety briefing and about the route itself, which started from our offices by highway to El Vellón, where it continued via Torrelaguna to El Berrueco, where we began a double loop in search of the Sierra del Rincón, a mandatory pilgrimage site that could well pass through an alpine country. Between stops to exchange motorcycles and impressions, there was time to have a snack before lunch, a must, in the Dehesa de El Berrueco. There we were able to exchange opinions and gain strength to return to the editorial office in the middle of the afternoon, first passing through the El Atazar dam and the towns of Uceda and Valdepiélagos. Quite a route lady with its corresponding photo and video points.
Our readers were very professional at all times and like good journalists, they spoke to the camera as soon as they got off the motorcycle to tell their impressions:
- Alberto González: “…I was quite reluctant to this type of changes, used to manual transmission, although now there are quickshifters and blippers, but the truth is that you get used to it quite quickly; I wouldn’t change it perhaps, but who knows in the future. It seems like a very comfortable option…”
- Oscar Tejado: “…the automatic transmission on the bike is great, it works very well, but I like the manual transmission (with buttons) even more. The CP3 engine is incredible…”
- Ángel David Guardarazo: “…I have a 2008 FZ6 S2 and I was considering changing it for the Tracer 9 GT Y-AMT. I was convinced by what I had read, but it has exceeded my expectations…”
- Álvaro Pérez-Pastor: “…the automatic and/or semi-automatic gearbox it has is incredible. So much so that I believe that all of us who have done the route today have agreed that the manual gearbox on the foot of the motorcycles that has existed until now, has a news program left. It makes no sense that, with this type of changes, we continue to shift with the foot…”
- Rafael Camblor: “…I come from a BMW R1200RT and I have been pleasantly surprised with the Y-AMT gearbox. It is a delight, both for traveling and for going out to take some curves on a mountain road. It is very precise, very comfortable and with an incredible response. I, personally, have loved the Tracer 7…”
In the end, it turned out to be a fantastic day with friends. Even the heat spared us, as most of the route ran at altitudes above 800 m. Being able to test motorcycles and enjoy the route, food and biker chat is always a pleasure. If it also serves to clear up doubts about the new technologies applied to the motorcycle (such as in this case the Y-AMT gearbox and resolve issues -sometimes, prejudices-), we can confirm that the SoyMotero Experience is a very efficient way to take advantage of time, right?
