The rise of electric vehicles seems to be excessive in some cases. The authorities demand this type of energy and manufacturers create products in accordance with the regulations. However, the end customer often he is not ready to take that leap and adopt electrical technology. That forces bitter moves like the one recently announced. Ford reduces production of the Capria model that is still in the process of reaching different markets.
Although the first arrived at the end of summer, their sales have not yet taken off in Spain, although there are other countries that have had more weight in the decision. It seems that the demand for electric vehicles is lower than expected, specifically in Germany, which is the country where the Ford Capri is manufactured. It shares a production line with its twin brother, the Explorer, in facilities that have been completely remodeled after an exemplary investment.
The Ford plant in Cologne is the one that gave life to the legendary Fiesta for decades. After the retirement of that model, 2,000 million euros were dedicated to transform the facilities and prepare them to be able to manufacture electric models. The oval firm reached an agreement with the Volkswagen Group to share technologies and created the Explorer and Capri using the MEB platform which also gives life to the German IDs. Now it is discouraging to see how they have to take their foot off the accelerator in the production of these electric vehicles.
Starting next week, exemplary reductions in working hours will be applied, producing the Capri every other week until the end of the year. That means three weeks less of the production cycle, before the Christmas holidays. The affected workers will be transferred during these stoppages and part of the reduction in working hours will be covered, but concern is high. In this way, daily production in Cologne will go from 630 vehicles to 480 units and we will have to see what 2025 brings.
