Hero MotoCorp bets on hybrid technology for its future motorcycles

Hero MotoCorp is working on new hybrid technologies for its future models, in response to the growing demand for alternatives to traditional internal combustion engines. According to CEO Niranjan Gupta, “The market will continue to see alternative propulsion technologies. As you know, there are internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicles (EV), which are gaining traction in the industry. We are exploring flexible fuels and ethanol-based technologies. In the long term, we are also developing hybrid technologies.“He said when asked about the potential of compressed natural gas (CNG) systems and whether the company has medium-term plans for them.

Recently, the industry has seen the introduction of CNG as an alternative propulsion option. Bajaj Auto became the first motorcycle manufacturer to launch a model with this technology, while TVS Motor plans to introduce a CNG-powered scooter soon. As for hybrid technology, which combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, its adoption in the two-wheeler segment in India remains limited.

Currently, Yamaha is the only brand in India offering a hybrid vehicle, with its 125cc Fascino scooter. Royal Enfield is also reported to be working on the technology. TVS has long ruled out that option. In Europe, we have the two Kawasaki models and a third on the way.

While the popularity of hybrids in the automobile segment has grown significantly, even surpassing sales of electric vehicles in some regions, this technology is still gaining traction in the two-wheeler market. As an example, a complete tax exemption for strong hybrid cars has recently been implemented in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Hero MotoCorp continues to strengthen its electric vehicle division under the Vida brand, with plans to expand its portfolio this year from the current two models to four. One of the new scooters is expected to be a low-cost model, while the other will be aimed at the mid-range segment.
