Recently, Sling has again applied for registration of the trademark “Elsinore» in the US for «Motorcycles and their structural parts«. Let us remember that this legendary mount, known in the rest of the world as CR250Rwas launched in the early seventies and became an instant success for the brand.
The CR250M Elsinore The motorcycle emerged in 1973 in the United States and Europe as a response to the growing popularity of motocross, both in competitions and in sales. It is also a piece of two-wheeled history. This was the first mass-produced motorcycle of the Sling for motocross, equipped with a two-stroke engine and designed completely from scratch. Its success was instant, standing out for its maneuverability, build quality and remarkable reliability. A legend was born.
Secrets of the Honda Elsinore
Named after the mythical Elsinore Grand Prixheld near Lake Elsinore in California, featured a 247.8 cc air-cooled engine, powering its 104 kg weight. Its structure consisted of a tubular steel chassis with a semi-double cradle frame, telescopic fork, steel swingarm, double rear shock absorbers and drum brakes at both the front and rear.
This is not the first time in recent years that Sling seeks to revive the name ElsinoreThe original trademark expired in 1993, but was renewed in 2014, again in 2017, and once more in 2020. This type of move is common among companies, which retain the rights to old model names so they can reuse them.
But what changes now? In December 2020, the Trademark Modernization Actwhose purpose is to reduce the number of inactive brands and ensure that only those that are actually used are maintained. Therefore, when Sling filed its applications on August 29, and concrete plans for using the trademark are expected to be in place in the near future.
Sling has filed two separate applications in the United States. One for “Motorcycles and their structural parts» and another for «stickers«. As far as we know, he has not made similar applications in other countries so far. The fact that the new applications cover both motorcycles and decals (stickers), could indicate that he plans to use the name Elsinore in American versions of motorcycles that, in other markets, have different names, perhaps in the CRF line, which is a direct descendant of the first Elsinore.
Finally, I would like to tell you that the name Elsinoreinspired and popularized by Steve McQueen in the movie “On Any Sunday” from 1971, is closely associated with the golden age of off-road racing in the 1970s.
One thing is clear, with the current boom in retro and scrambler-style motorcycles with off-road capabilities, this announcement from Sling seeks to sow fertile ground for the factory.
