New KTM 125 SMC R and 390 SMC R in detail

For this new year KTM renews its SMC R range with new elements in the different key points of both models. Starting with its 2-piece steel tubular chassis based on the Gen 3 platform used by the smaller displacement Duke models. For the occasion it presents a different steering angle, triple clamps, subframe supports and rigidity profile, designed specifically for Offroad use, with better handling, control and stability.

The new frame is also designed for greater clearance for the radiator package, with footpeg placement optimized to better suit riding style and the requirements of aggressive supermoto-style riding. They also debut a new subframe specifically designed to offer a one-piece seat. The new gravity die-cast swingarm is derived from the new generation Adventure range of lower capacity.

At the suspension level, the SMC R range has a 43 mm WP APEX inverted fork at the front, while at the rear we find a displaced monoshock. In both cases we have up to 230 mm of travel on both axles, and different settings if we talk about the 390 SMC R.

Braking on the KTM 125 SMC R and KTM 390 SMC R uses 320 mm radial discs at the front and 240 mm at the rear. The assembly is anchored to 17” wheels at each end, shod with 110/70 R17 and 150/60 R17 tires, front and rear respectively. Mechanically, both SMC R models are powered by a new generation of single-cylinder engines that debuted in the recent KTM Duke range. These engines are completely redesigned, with newly optimized cylinder heads and gearboxes ready to comply with EURO 5+ regulations.

This new LC4c engine features a larger valve cover with a smaller cylinder head, reducing weight at the top end of the engine. A new thermostat position, mounted directly on the cylinder head, improves thermal control and provides more stable operating temperatures in different driving conditions.

The new injectors are now angled directly into the intake valves to reduce buildup in the intake runner. These new injectors also provide finer fuel spray, resulting in more efficient combustion and fewer emissions. A new airbox has also been optimized to fit the SMC R package.

This has been done to allow the engine to sit higher, increasing ground clearance and allowing for a more centered driver’s triangle. A unique stainless steel exhaust design means the system fitted to the KTM 125 SMC R and KTM 390 SMC R does not require a silencer.

The active combustion system also works to detect any misfires, which helps diagnose the condition of the catalytic converter and store information for OBDII diagnostics. All this combined with a revision of the gearbox in which the movements of the gears along the axles are now smoother.
