We all knew that Jorge Martín was going to give his all to be able to take to the track at the Malaysian GP. The Spaniard is fighting for the title and the distal radius injury he suffered in his right hand comes at a critical moment. So knowing this, and that Martín and his team had drawn up a plan to have some option, they were waiting for the medical examination.
A review that has been carried out by the MotoGP medical team, and that has given the green light for the Aprilia rider to go out on the track in FP1 and then be re-evaluated. Taking into account that it is the doctors who have all the information in their hands, the protocol followed is typical of other occasions, where an injured pilot receives a conditional clearance and is re-evaluated during the weekend.
Until then we can say, therefore, that there are no surprises because on the one hand we knew that Martín was going to put all his will and the medical team was going to impose their professional criteria to make a decision. However, the striking thing came later, when Martín spoke to the media.
Martín has openly acknowledged having serious problems, but at the same time he has confirmed that the bone is not completely broken.
As we say, the really surprising thing in this situation came when Martín spoke with the GPOne colleagues who had traveled to Sepang. The situation that the Spanish driver is going through, who is also playing for the title, makes him the center of attention. And when asked about his condition, he was quite blunt.
Martín has acknowledged that he feels fine although he could be worse, and that they will have to check his real condition and his sensations on the bike, and then he will decide. But the really shocking thing came later, when he was asked why he waits for tomorrow, when he has recognized the situation he is going through and the reasons that drive him:
“Trying to run with a broken bone will be very difficult and painful, but I will do it because I am fighting for the title. If it weren’t like that, I would be at home with the splint for a month. It’s the only thing I can do, or at least try to do, although I don’t know what my chances will be.”
That he publicly acknowledges that he should rest is already a point that draws attention, but it is a risk he runs and that is easy to understand from his point of view. But what is really shocking is that Jorge himself openly acknowledges that right now he cannot brush his teeth with his right hand and, nevertheless, receives the go-ahead to go out on the track.
In fact, this was what he answered to the question of whether he had gotten on his motorcycle in the box: “Not yet. I don’t know, right now I can’t even brush my teeth with my right hand, I do it with my left. I practically can’t do anything with my right, but maybe I can drive. I’m not really optimistic, but I’m not too pessimistic either, because after five days I’m here and I can drive. This already seems crazy to me. I’ve done therapy to arrive in the best possible condition, and now we’ll see how far I can go.”
Seen from the outside and with all possible caution based on Jorge’s statements, certain parallels with past errors are discernible. And even Martín himself has acknowledged to his DAZN colleagues that a fall or a bad gesture could end up breaking the radius, confirming that there was no complete fracture.
“I’m taking a lot of risks… but I’m willing to take them” 💥

We will therefore have to wait for the first training sessions to see how far Martín can go on the bike, how he really is and what assessment the doctors make because, obviously, there is information about the situation that is not on the table.
