Yamaha’s R saga is the most extensive in its catalogue, we had from the R1 to the R125 and in between the 3, there was the 6, the 7 and the 9 arrived… and now the R2 is added. A light, entry-level sports car that arrives in the Japanese manufacturer’s catalog to be the intermediate step between the 125 and the R3.
The most striking thing about this model, which for now has been presented in India and which is expected to focus on emerging markets, is that it maintains a contained weight practically at the level of the R125 but increases power to 26.5 HP, so performance will have nothing to do with it at all.
The Yamaha R2 is more equipped than you would expect
To achieve this power, a 204 cc single cylinder engineThat is to say, there is not a much larger displacement than in the 125 but 11 HP is gained compared to the R125 and that is only as a starting point, because the new R2 seems to be more than a simple model to complete the range but rather offers quality details.
On an entry-level motorcycle like the R2, what might be expected is that we would be looking at a simple model, but there are some interesting details beyond the tubular steel chassis, the inverted fork or the fact that it has ABS. And the new model has a four-piston radial caliper, electronic accelerator, three driving modes (Street, Sport and Rain) and a 5” TFT.
The range includes different versions
To this we must add that there are different versions that start from the basic one, the R2 without “last name” through the R2 QS that has a bidirectional quickshifter and the R2 M in which the suspensions and adjustable levers are added.
Of course, the bad news is that for now this new toy that can be really fun in the right hands has been launched in India. For now there is no confirmation of its arrival in Spain or Europe and, in fact, commercially with our driving license system it may not make sense to do so either. Of course, there is no doubt that the concept, without being the same, recalls in a certain way the essence of those sports in which lightness took precedence over power.
