Panasonic announces the launch of its new 4680 lithium-ion battery with which it promises to revolutionize the EV sector

Three years have passed since Panasonic first showed its new 4680 lithium ion batteriesdeveloped mainly to power Tesla’s new electric models. Then, the Japanese brand already predicted an improvement in performance with respect to the conventional 2170, as well as a reduction in production costs thanks to its larger size compared to the rest of the models manufactured by the Japanese firm.

As Panasonic explains in its latest official statement: “4680 batteries offer five times more capacity than conventional 2170 batteries, which will allow greater autonomy in electric vehicles and reduce costs by requiring fewer cells per battery pack. “This development will not only make electric vehicles more accessible, but will also optimize assembly processes.”

4680 Lithium Ion Batteries in Detail

The name of the new Panasonic 4680 batteries refers to the external dimensions it has: 46 mm wide by 80 mm high. Its autonomy is increased by 16%, while the energy capacity is five times greater. Another surprising fact is the declared final power, which is multiplied by six, even managing to reduce production costs by 14% per kWh.

Panasonic has used its more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing cylindrical batteries to develop a method of mass production of these high-performance cells. The Wakayama factory, with around 400 employees by March 2025, is expected to play a key role in improving the quality and competitiveness of its products.

Kazuo Tadanobupresident and CEO of Panasonic Energy, has commented on its new 4680 battery: “I am excited that we are ready to begin mass production of the cutting-edge 4680 cell. This milestone is the result of years of experience manufacturing cylindrical lithium-ion batteries.”

Concludes: “I am sure it will significantly revolutionize the battery and electric vehicle industry. By adding the 4680 cell to our range, we will address a broader range of needs, further promoting the use of EVs and advancing our mission to foster a sustainable society.”

Now that Tesla is looking for new partners to support the development of its models, Panasonic could establish new collaboration agreements with countless brands present in the automotive sector, including those that focus their development on models intended for the two-wheeled market.

Perhaps we will soon see new generation electric mounts powered by the new 4680 lithium ion batteries.
