Rivian R2 2026: the family grows with this rival for the Tesla Model Y

Rivian has been around for several years giving something to talk about. It is said early, but in 2018 they presented the first electric pick-up, their R1T. It was accompanied by the R1S in SUV format, but the truth is that its first units were delayed due to some problems. Now that they seem to have left those rocky beginnings behind them, they intend to grow their family and even expand to the European continent after an agreement with Mercedes. They have just presented the Rivian R2an electric SUV much more logical than its other models.

In fact, there are already many who venture to treat it as a future rival for the Tesla Model Y taking into account its potential. They define it as a medium SUV with 4,715mm length which has a design that continues with that language so characteristic of the brand. The oval headlights are very recognizable and are joined by a illuminated ribbon large dimensions, as well as the absence of a grille or the rectilinear shapes of its two-color bodywork. The rear also has lights joined in the center and a large tailgate.

In its cabin It also presents new features, since the Rivian R2 has complete digitalization. There are no buttons and everything focuses on digital instrumentation and, above all, the main touch screen. They claim that the multifunction steering wheel has haptic controls and that the technology is going to be really complete. It is still early to talk about its capabilities, but it seems that the interior will be really spacious and that the atmosphere will be pleasant thanks to the light provided by the large glass surfaces.

The electric propulsion system has not yet been detailed, but it is confirmed that there will be three variants. The first will be with a single rear motor (RWD), the second with two motors and all-wheel drive (AWD) and the third will be the most performance-oriented with its three motors, adding one more on the rear axle. In that case, truly outstanding performance can be achieved with 0 to 100 km/h in around 3 seconds. The capacity has not been said about the battery either, but the Rivian R2 may have autonomy greater than 480 kilometers.

The Rivian R2 is already accepting reservations in the United States, but there is still a long way to go before it reaches the market. The first units are expected to be delivered during the first half of 2026, although the jump to Europe would come a little later. There is talk of a price of 45,000 dollars in its home market, but here in order to rival the Tesla Model Y it should stay around the 42,000 euros that it is currently managing.
