The BMW M5 combines efficiency and power, with a hybrid drive system that enables it to reach a maximum output of 727 hp and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. Thanks to the combination of a V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, an electric motor and an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, the new BMW M5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. The car, which had its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in July, will be launched on the global market in November 2024.
The new sedan was on display in the paddock of the Austrian circuit, where Aprilia MotoGP riders Aleix Espargaró and Raúl Fernández took it for a ride around the Red Bull Ring track. The BMW M5 Touring was also on display, which had its world premiere at Pebble Beach, California. This model has a combined weighted energy consumption of 2.0 l/100 km and 30.7 kWh/100 km, according to WLTP, and combined CO₂ emissions of 46 g/km.
Dan Rossomondo, DORNA’s commercial director
“For more than two decades, BMW M GmbH has rewarded the winner of the BMW M Award with an incredible car, and this year’s M5 is no exception. As well as being spectacular, it contains ground-breaking technology, perfectly embodying what MotoGP also stands for: performance, passion and innovation. The BMW M Award is a key pillar of our partnership, a highly coveted award among our riders and proof of how much BMW M GmbH values their achievements on the track. We can’t wait to find out who will own the new BMW M5 this year.”
Axel Mittler, BMW Marketing Director in MotoGP
“Following the BMW XM Label Red from the 2023 season, the new BMW M5 is the second BMW M Award-winning car with an electrified drive system. It represents BMW M’s enthusiasm for future technologies. The new BMW M5 is the current flagship of our model range and had its world premiere just a few weeks ago. We are very pleased to present this brand-new high-performance model as a BMW M Award-winning car even before its market launch. It’s going to be an exciting race for this award, and we wish all MotoGP riders the best of luck.”
Since 2003, the BMW M Award has recognised the MotoGP rider with the best performance in qualifying sessions. Riders score points in each Grand Prix weekend qualifying, using the same points system as in the races. At the end of the season, the rider with the most points wins the coveted BMW M Award. Marc Márquez holds the record with seven consecutive awards between 2013 and 2019, while Francesco Bagnaia has been the winner for the past two years. This award stands out for its tradition and the prestige associated with receiving an innovative BMW M model as a prize.
