Europe is the most restrictive continent with CO2 emissions. In these parts, the pollution caused by different means of transport is closely monitored, with special emphasis on vehicles. That is why the main bet is on electrification and within a few years electric vehicles will be the norm. So much so that the European Commission invests 4.6 billion euros in two new proposals that want to accelerate the adoption of this technology. They know that decarbonization requires a joint effort and they are going to focus on batteries for electric and green hydrogen.
The first call is the one that takes into account the batteries of electric vehicles. With a budget of 3.4 billion of euros will help reinforce the leadership and production capacity of these key elements for electric companies. All this while moving towards carbon neutrality by 2050. There is a general call to net zero emissions technology projectsworth 2.4 billion euros, which will have to prove to be innovative, replicable and profitable. The remaining 1,000 million go to the manufacture of electric battery cells or implement techniques and processes that improve their production.
On the other hand, there is a second action that consists of the creation of the European Hydrogen Bank. The Commission has provided 1.2 billion euros and more than 700 million additional euros will be added from three member states. The key is that this fuel, which has so much potential, is obtained from a renewable form and of non-biological origin. The role of hydrogen may be highlighted in the future thanks to fuel cell technology as a range extender for electric vehicles. In heavy transport it could gain integers to achieve long distances without hardly stopping, but obtaining it cleanly is of vital importance.
This investment by the European Commission does not take place in its own projects, it works rather as a subsidy for third party projectsthat are interesting in the aforementioned matter. Those who are working on the development of batteries for electric vehicles and green hydrogen will be able to submit their applications until April 24, 2025. Although the subsidies will not arrive until the first quarter of 2026, the truth is that they could be beneficial. Spain has announced its participationso you will be able to use national funds to support projects in your territory without having to hold a separate auction at the national level.
