They have dared. He Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeedwhich we learned about in May as a prototype, is released and will be the first model in the Mythos family. A high-performance two-seater, based on the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 that dispenses with a roof and windshield to offer maximum driving sensations. Only 250 units will be manufactured, at a price to be determined.
This Mythos series draws inspiration from legendary racing cars and, of course, the appearance of the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed attests to this. The front part is similar to that of the SL, with a large air intake, AMG initials and a dark chrome Mercedes star on the front, reminiscent of the Mercedes-AMG ONE.
Starting with the aerodynamically optimized hood, everything changes. Instead of conventional A-pillars it has a HALO system, like current Formula 1 cars. It runs through the entire central part of the vehicle to protect the occupants in the event of a rollover. It also includes two rigid roll bars hidden under the aerodynamic fins, which form part of the frame structure and the HALO illuminates indirectly at the bottom.
It has 21-inch forged aluminum wheels (275/35 front and 305/30 rear tires) and there are also two hulls designed and manufactured specifically for the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. They are the color of the car and have a communication system so that passengers can talk to each other, listen to music or talk on the phone.
Other details pay homage to motorsport, such as the two blades located behind the seats with the AMG emblem and are reminiscent of legendary racing cars such as the 300 SLR, the car that Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson drove to victory in the Mille Miglia (a 1,000 mile race) in 1955 in Italy.
The interior features AMG Performance seats with special leather upholstery and decorative stitching. The area behind them incorporates carbon fiber. The door sills are also covered in leather. The AMG Performance steering wheel continues the idea of the two-color interior. In the center of the dashboard there is a custom analogue clock designed by IWC Schaffhausen and on the center console a badge indicating that the model is part of the Mythos series, with the inscription “1 of 250”.
And yes, to protect the car from inclement weather, such as rain or storms, when parked, a weather protection cover is offered as standard. It extends over the interior, including the HALO, and is attached to the wheel arches. It is added to a specific AMG interior cover.
In the mechanical section, the bet is on the 4.0-liter AMG V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 HP) of maximum power and 800 Nm of torque. It announces an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, with a maximum speed of 315 km/h. It is associated with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission in which a wet starter clutch replaces the torque converter to reduce weight. It has AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution between the front axles, active steering of the rear axle, carbon-ceramic brakes, or the Active Ride Control suspension.
