Is there anything better than an auction of Old School motorcycles?… Even more so, if some of the examples that will be offered belong to the personal collection of someone as relevant within the automotive sector as he is. Harry Metcalfe.
Specifically, there will be four mounts that will make up this lot: Kawasaki Z1300 from 1979, Yamaha XT500 from 1978, Honda XL500R from 1984 and Yamaha XTZ750 Super Tenere from 1989.
Harry Metcalfe and his love for the “oldies”
There is no doubt that Metcalfe is an institution in the world of British motorsport, thanks to having such relevant events as the founding of EVO magazine in 1998. Later, he would also launch his own YouTube channel, with more than 840 thousand subscribers, in which he shows the world the tests of some of the most iconic cars manufactured in history.
Now he has decided to reduce his current collection of motorcycles, currently numbering around 35 examples. As he himself explained: “Over the years, I have amassed a collection of 35 truly extraordinary vehicles, all of which hold a special place in my heart. However, now I feel the time is right to start narrowing down my collection.”
The four beauties, which Metcalfe will soon part with, will be auctioned by Iconic Auctioneers on Next Sunday, November 9 on the occasion of the celebration of NEC Classic Motor Show 2025. Among them we have a Yamaha XTZ750 Super Tenere, inspired by the 1989 Paris-Dakar, for which it is expected to raise a final figure that could range between one thousand and three thousand pounds.
The second protagonist of this auction is a beautiful 1979 Z1300which they describe as “a six-cylinder Kawasaki emblematic of the golden age of Japanese superbikes.” Whoever wants to get it will have to pay a figure between 6 and 8 thousand pounds, according to the expert’s estimate. It is clarified about her that “presents well but hasn’t been used for a while so may need a slight tune up.”
The third in contention is a legendary 1979 Yamaha XT500, “an impeccable example of the legendary Yamaha XT500, the motorcycle that inspired the Paris-Dakar dream”they clarify from Iconic Auctioneers. With an estimated value between 4 and 6 thousand pounds, we are “a highly desirable example of Yamaha’s iconic trail motorcycle, combining provenance, period significance and collector appeal”in the words of the auctioneer.
Finally we have a magnificent 1984 Honda XL500R which could be sold for a final price between 3 and 5 thousand pounds. The well-known website specialized in auctions explains about it: “A magnificent example of Honda’s robust XL500R, purchased to celebrate its legacy in the Paris-Dakar Rally.” And they also clarify that it is “Well presented and ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.”
