This is how the first Spanish highway with a variable speed limit works

We have been in which artificial intelligence is gradually gaining space in our day to day, almost without realizing it. What was only available to a few researchers, is now open to the general public and anyone can access applications from your phone that allow you to approach it.

But there are also much more complex or practical applications, in which artificial intelligence is already working. In the world of automotive there are many vehicles (including motorcycles) that are already worth it to make decisions, especially autonomous vehicles, but also control and safety systems.

That is the case of the pilot project that the Generalitat of Catalonia has launched in the AP-7, in the section that links Maçanet de la Selva (Girona) and the Vendrell (Tarragona). 150 kilometers of highway that can vary the maximum speed allowed depending on the traffic situation.

Depending on the conditions of the road the speed will increase or decrease

It is a dynamic speed limits system, in which different factors will influence when deciding which is the maximum permitted speed. These factors will influence traffic conditions, road or weather and all this in real time to modify the limit.

Artificial intelligence will decide which is the most appropriate speed

This limit will be subsequently informed in the luminous posters that replace the usual ones and, as we said, it will rely on the artificial intelligence that will be responsible for calculating depending on the parameters (vehicle density, peak hours, accidents, breakdowns, weather conditions), what is the safest speed for road users.

And although in Spain there have long been some areas with variable limits, such as some accesses to Barcelona or the M-30 in Madrid (although in episodes of high pollution), it is a measure that has not been usually implemented, despite its positive impact on reducing accidents.

Artificial intelligence continues to gain land in automotive
Artificial intelligence continues to gain land in automotive

In fact, due to previous experiences in different areas of the world in which there are variable maximum speed systems, it is estimated that the number of accidents with injuries has been reduced to 18%. And this, whether by mediation of artificial intelligence or humans, is always good news.
