Volkswagen Golf R 2024: now with 333 hp by default and new improvements

If there is a compact sports car that has a halo of splendor around it, that is the one. Volkswagen Golf R 2024. It’s been more than two decades since the first R, which was positioned as a big brother for the Golf GTI. Performance took a new place due to all-wheel drive and more powerful engines. Although the six-cylinder model has not been brought back, the latest updates have surprised with its performance. And now we have a model that could be the last pure R without electrification.

The history of the Golf R is quite long, but its evolutions They have always been moderate. The truth is that this new example is in line with the latest facelift of the Volkswagen Golf, with the usual additions to look sportier. This translates into greater lighting prominence thanks to the LED Plus headlights with the illuminated brand logo and also the LED taillights. In this example, air curtains appear on the bumper and 19-inch forged wheels Warmenau weighing just 8 kg each.

Another novelty that affects its aesthetics is the launch of a special edition. This is the Volkswagen Golf R Black Edition, a model in which, as its name indicates, black is prioritized. Its bodywork, logos, brake calipers, specific wheels or the exhaust system trims with quad outlet are dyed in that tone. In addition, as standard it mounts the R-Performance packagewhich is optional for the rest.

This package serves to improve its performance, as it unlocks the model’s top speed and also provides it with a couple of key aspects. It introduces the Drift and Special modes, the first being to be able to give free rein to the rear axle and the second for a set-up inspired by the conditions of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Also included in this package is a larger roof spoilera GPS lap timer and G-force meter.

What was clear is that the Volkswagen Golf R would keep the engine 2.0 TSI four-cylinder which had already been mounted previously. In the last special edition it reached a higher power level and it is precisely from this point that it is taken as a starting point now. 333 HP and 420 Nm of torquealways linked to the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive with R-Performance Torque Vectoring. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h with the R-Performance package.

The chassis has an improved setup thanks to the DCC running gear adding to the system Vehicle Dynamics Manager. It offers comfortable driving on a daily basis, and can be really extreme when required. In addition, it maintains its habitability and has an interior finished with sports seats and, optionally, applications in real carbon fiber. The price of the Golf R starts in Germany from 53,795 euros and reaches 58,440 euros in the Black Edition, although in our market it will be higher.
