What happens to Bagnaia? The Italian points directly to his Ducati, but is it true?

Bagnaia’s face after Italy’s GP was a poem. The Italian hoped to shine at home and far from that, he was third on Saturday in the sprint and fourth on Sunday at the GP, being surpassed at the last moment by Fabio Di Giannantonio, which also pilots a GP25. Now, after the GP, Pecco begins to point out clearly and does so with statements that make clear his story of heartbreak with the GP25.

A Desposedici GP25 that has been said again and again to be very similar to 24 but that, in the words of Bagnaia it is not so. According to the Ducati pilot, the changes are important in terms of peso and motor distribution, and that makes it not comfortable. It is curious to hear this when from the brand the whole season has ensured that there was no difference.

But the most striking of this situation is that in Motorland Aragón, after a change in the diameter of the front brake discs, everything seemed to be fixed. A simple “patch” that was demonstrated ineffective in Mugello, and is that Bagnaia now comments that the whole problem comes in the instability of the front train, but by parameters that can hardly be changed.

In Mugello he tried everything, but it wasn’t possible

And if part of the problems come from the engine, it is something that can no longer be changed by being approved for the whole season. The striking thing is that of the GP25, the only one who is constantly being competitive is Marc, and for that Bagnaia has an explanation as simple as logic: “I need a stable motorcycle on the front train, I lead it a lot with the front. Marc, on the other hand, prefers a motorcycle with a lot of subviring and then turns it with the gas.”

What do Bagnaia numbers say?

Now, if we analyze what we have been from the 2025 season against the same GP of 202.4 it is possible that the problem is not so much the Ducati but the rival. After 9 GP, last year the ninth was that of Germany and this year it has been that of Italy, Bagnaia led with 222 points with 6 victories, two falls in Sprint and one in GP. This year, Marc leads with 270 points, with 5 victories and a single zero, that of the United States.

To this we must add that Álex Márquez, with the GP24, is second with 230 points. That is, both the first and the second classified of 2025 carry more points than the 2024 Pecco leader, and that without counting the points that could have “stolen” the brothers. In that case, playing to remove Marc and Alex from the equation, Bagnaia would be close to the points of 2024 at this point or even above. Although this are merely speculation, they do show a path.

But there is more and although it is true that in Mugello this year it has gone slower than the previous season, it has not been the whole season. In Jerez, for example, the race was two seconds faster than in 2024, and Bagnaia entered third precisely those two seconds.

In Qatar we cannot compare because this year we had one more return, but Marc beat the quick return record with 1’52,561, Bagnaia’s was 1’52.710, while last year was 1’52.667. Aragon was remarkably faster because of the track conditions, just like the United Kingdom, while France, Thailand and the United States, all with the rain race cannot be compared.

That is, despite the problems of trust with the motorcycle that Bagnaia is having, the reality is that it is being practically just as fast with the motorcycle of 2025. That shows the data that can be compared. Pecco’s difference is that this year has the Márquez brothers rolling slightly faster, at least for the moment.
