Zontes’ offense continues to grow. After consolidating its presence in the market with medium-displacement models and the development of its 703 cc three-cylinder family, the Asian firm takes an important step with a motorcycle shown at the Milan Motor Show that, due to power, architecture and components, points directly to the high-performance naked segment.
Zontes ZT853-R: a new 847 cc three-cylinder with 150 HP
The heart of the new Zontes ZT853-R is an 847 cc in-line three-cylinder engine that represents an important evolution with respect to the 703 cc engine that until now featured in a good part of the brand’s sports range. This time, the objective is clearly different: to enter the territory of large-displacement naked bikes and offer performance capable of competing with models from much more established manufacturers.
According to the announced data, this engine develops 150 HP at 12,500 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 90 Nm at 9,000 rpm. The character of this mechanic promises to be one of its main arguments. The three-cylinder configuration seeks to combine the recovery capacity of a two-cylinder with the ease of turning up the laps of a four-cylinder, a particularly interesting formula in a sports naked that will have to handle both twisty roads and fast roads.
The announced benefit figures are also compelling. Zontes claims acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 280 km/h. These are records that would place the ZT853-R in a very competitive position within its category.
We are not, therefore, facing a simple evolution of the ZT703-R with a little more displacement. The new 853-R represents a change in approach, with much more ambitious mechanics and a chassis developed to manage a considerably higher level of power.
Aluminum chassis and single-sided swingarm: a first-class cycle part
If the engine is the main protagonist of this presentation, the cycle part deserves special attention. Zontes has developed a new aluminum frame whose combined weight with the subframe is just 10 kg. It is a structure designed to offer the necessary rigidity in a 150 HP motorcycle without penalizing the weight of the assembly too much.
In fact, one of the most interesting facts announced about this naked is its declared weight of 183 kg dry. It is a particularly striking figure, although we will still have to know its real weight with all the liquids and the tank full.
Another element that immediately attracts attention is the aluminum single-sided swingarm. This solution, in addition to providing a much more exclusive and sporty image, allows a good part of the rear wheel to be visible and reinforces the personality of a motorcycle that wants to differentiate itself within its segment.
The secondary transmission uses an EK 525 DEX Black Gold chain and a CNC machined crown, details that show the care put into certain components and finishes.
In the suspensions section we find material signed by Kayaba. At the front it has a 43 mm inverted fork with DLC treatment on the bars, a technology that reduces friction and improves the operation of the assembly. It has 115 mm of travel and allows you to regulate its operating parameters. At the rear there is a shock absorber that is also adjustable, with 58 mm of travel and anchoring by connecting rods.
Brembo brakes and electronics with six-axis IMU
The acceleration capacity of a motorcycle of this level requires a braking system to match. Zontes has turned to Brembo to equip the ZT853-R, with Brembo Stylema calipers, 310 mm discs, a PR16 radial pump and, at the rear, a Brembo P34 caliper with a Nissin pump.
Electronics also take a considerable leap. The ZT853-R incorporates a six-axis IMU inertial platform that allows different assistance to be managed taking into account the inclination and movements of the motorcycle.
Among its main systems we find cornering ABS and traction control, as well as an anti-wheelie adjustable in four levels. This last element will allow the behavior of the front axle to be adapted during stronger accelerations.
The equipment is completed with ride-by-wire electronic throttle, bi-directional quick change and Launch Control. It also incorporates cruise control, a solution that expands its versatility and shows that Zontes did not want to develop a machine exclusively oriented towards sports driving.
Radical design, carbon fiber and smart technology
Visually, the new Zontes ZT853-R breaks with the more conventional image of other naked models of the brand. Its design relies on angular lines, marked surfaces and a muscular-looking body that clearly conveys its sporting aspirations.
The front incorporates Full LED lighting, with an optical assembly with aggressive aesthetics that is integrated into a body with very sharp lines. We also find small aerodynamic elements, such as integrated side fins, which help reinforce its personality. Carbon fiber is present in different components, including the aerodynamic fins themselves, the fenders, the tank cover and some protections.
The subsequent set does not go unnoticed either. The single-sided swingarm, the two raised exhausts and the seat divided into two heights create a particularly sporty silhouette. The seat upholstery incorporates visible seams and seeks to provide a more careful finish. The driving position also seems to respond to this dynamic orientation. Zontes has opted for a flat aluminum handlebar and footpegs whose position and orientation can be adjusted.
Regarding instrumentation, the ZT853-R debuts a digital screen arranged in a horizontal format that concentrates driving, navigation and stopwatch information. Added to this feature is the Intelligent Control System 4.0, which incorporates unlocking using NFC technology. The motorcycle is also compatible with the Zontes 2.0 application, from which different parameters can be consulted, such as tire pressure or the location of the vehicle.
