There are classic motorcycles that simply disappeared and others that became a photograph. The Galbusera Toyo V8 belongs to that second group. The project was presented at the 1938 Milan Motor Show, it had already rained, it never became a production motorcycle, but its concept was so extraordinary that it ended up becoming one of those rarities that survive in the history books.
We already talked to you about her. But now, after some time, and as we are telling you, his story has a new chapter. The Italian craftsman Mirco Snaidero He spent around 11 years rebuilding that machine in Friuli, working from very limited historical documentation and the few images that had survived of the original prototype. The result began to show and even recovered the functioning of the peculiar propellant.

Galbusera Toyo V8: a two-stroke V8 of only 500 cc
The idea of Plinio Galbusera and Marama Toyo It was already extraordinary by the end of the 30s. Toyo had developed a 2-stroke V4 engine of about 250 cc and the two decided to take the concept much further: combine 2 of those engines to create a V8 of approximately half a liter of displacement. The result used 8 cylinders and 2 counter-rotating crankshafts, a solution designed to manage the vibrations generated by such a peculiar architecture. Among its elements also appeared a four-speed gearbox and a «compressor supercharging system«.
The figures declared at the time did not exactly go unnoticed either. The Galbusera Toyo V8 announced 28 hp at 8,000 rpm and an approximate maximum speed of 150km/h. On a 500 cc motorcycle from the late 1930s, these were very striking features. And the most curious thing is that it was not simply a matter of assembling many cylinders for pure spectacle. The configuration sought to solve the problems inherent to a 2-stroke engine of such architecture.

The problem of putting together 8 cylinders and 2 strokes
A 2-stroke engine needs to manage gas exchange and cylinder filling very precisely. In the case of the Galbuseramultiplying that process by 8 made the design especially complicated. The solution was “use a compressor to boost engine power«. Added to this were the 2 counter-rotating crankshafts, as we told you before, and the complex gear system necessary to synchronize the assembly.
The result was an extraordinarily sophisticated mechanics for its time. It was also a difficult solution to manufacture, maintain, and turn into a viable commercial product. But, unfortunately, the war ended the project. The Galbusera Toyo V8 It was presented in 1938 and aroused a lot of expectation, but the historical context ended up working against it. World War II interrupted development and the project never made it beyond the prototype phase. After the war, Galbusera He resumed the activity with much more conventional motorcycles and «the extraordinary V8 was left aside«. As the years passed, even the original prototype disappeared.

The history of the motorcycle itself then became increasingly difficult to reconstruct. The available documentation was scarce and for decades the Galbusera V8 It was practically reduced to the photographs and historical references that had survived. Now is when it comes into the picture Mirco Snaidero. This hardworking Italian craftsman started the project in 2015 and spent almost 11 years returning the Galbusera Toyo V8 to reality.
The difficulty was not only in manufacturing the parts. It was also necessary to correctly interpret a motorcycle of which there were hardly any visual references left. Some sources speak of four old photographs as the fundamental basis of the work, while documentation related to the project mentions three images taken at the Milan Salon of 1938 and the subsequent appearance of additional documentation. The project progressed piece by piece until both the cycle part and the propulsion complex were completed. Furthermore, the same family of Galbusera He even provided documentation and original drawings that helped verify certain aspects of the reconstruction.
