Greece, that Mediterranean paradise to which millions of tourists travel every year, seem to become a true hell for those who like to travel by motorcycle without complying with the established norms. For example, to have the obligation to wear the helmet when we put ourselves at the controls of a motorcycle or cyclomotor.
Apparently, both the locals and the tourists who visit the country every year, generally ignore these regulations in force since 1992. The fact is that this trend could change radically in the coming months, since the Greek executive, tired of the high mortality rate fruit of motorcycle accidents, plans new even more restrictive and expensive measures on this referred.
And they are not reason if we stick to the official statistics of each year. At present, Greece is eight times smaller than Germany, however, in proportion to the number of inhabitants, the number of deaths in a motorcycle accident is three times higher than the one registered in the Teuton country.
Go by motorcycle in Greece, without a helmet and drunk, you can get very expensive
Currently, the fine for going without a helmet in Greece is 350 euros, but even its inhabitants and a good part of tourists make use of it. We do not know whether for a clear laxity of the authorities or for the lack of troops within the bodies that make up the latter. The fact is that the Greek government has proposed to drastically lower the number of deaths on a motorcycle and already plan a battery of measures with which to combat the lack of responsibility of users.
As we have known by the MSN news channel, since the end of 2024, as is the case for example in India, the Parliament of Greece approved the “Without Casco No Gasoline” campaign, where the country’s service stations cannot serve fuel to those users who, piloting a motorcycle, do not wear a regulatory helmet in the head. Seeing that even with this type of initiatives they manage to control this type of behavior, new measures already discuss with which to implement even more restrictive legal regulations.
Of course, the government of Greece knows what the average citizen hurts most, when we talk about administrative laws: the pocket. That is why, since this month of June, the hardening of current traffic standards in relation to the use of the helmet already discuss. In addition, as a novelty they introduce the intake of alcohol in the text, raising the current limit of 0.5 mm/l, to zero. That is to say, “If you drink, don’t pile”
We do not know how Greek and foreigners users who visit the country will be taken, since this standard would also include the latter. But according to the amounts that intend to impose more than one, it will be thought twice to get on a motorcycle without a helmet or with two beers in the body. The fine for not wearing a helmet will now be 1,000 euros And if you are a repeat offender, the amount will amount to 2,000 euros from the third infraction.
As for the sanctions for alcohol intake, they will vary between 1,000 and 1,500 euros, so it can be quite expensive to take a cyclomotor or motorcycle in Greece having consumed some alcoholic beverage previously. While it is not clear when the new laws in relation to these matters will enter into force, it is likely that the Greek Executive has lists even for this summer.
