What is the Austrian track where MotoGP Austria 2024 is being held like?
MotoGP Austria 2024 will take place at the Red Bull Ring, located in the village of Spielberg, near the town of Zeltweg, in the state of Styria, Austria. It is a circuit of just over 4 kilometers, with a capacity for 40,000 spectators. It has recently been recognized by the SCI as the racing location that has most improved its strategies to make motorsport more sustainable, compared to last year.
The circuit has only ten corners, making it one of the fastest and smoothest on the entire calendar. Due to the accidents that have occurred in recent years, caused by the long opening straight and the sharp right-hander that follows, it was decided to modify this turn number 2, transforming it into a chicane. However, this modification only affects motorcycle racing; in motor racing, the original shape of the curve is maintained.
What can we expect from MotoGP Austria 2024 this year if we look at the most recent editions?
- 2021: Brad Binder (KTM)
In a very exciting race, Brad Binder took victory in wet conditions. His decision not to change tyres when it started to rain allowed him to outperform the riders who did, giving him a spectacular home win for KTM. - 2022: Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati)
Bagnaia won the Austrian GP in 2022, showing great consistency and control under pressure. This was particularly significant as his performance was being questioned due to the five zeros he accumulated throughout the season. - 2023: Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati)
Bagnaia repeated the victory in 2023, dominating the race from pole position and establishing himself as one of the strongest contenders for that year’s title, alongside Jorge Martín. It was one of the most vibrant seasons in recent years, thanks to the talent of these two exceptional drivers.
As an additional, but no less important, fact, rain and storms are forecast for the weekend, a key factor for the races, as Brad Binder could attest after his latest victory on this circuit. Here you can read our preview for the weekend’s race.
