Alfa Romeo is going to abandon its legendary small license plates on the sides

The issue of car license plates has always brought about some debate. By regulations, it is not the same in the United States as here in Spain and that too affects the design of cars. Designers have to take this into account when creating their examples and there is less and less differentiation. Furthermore, now we receive news that we do not like to hear. And it seems that Alfa Romeo is going to abandon its legendary small license plates on the sidesone of the hallmarks that he maintained in his family of models.

While most cars have a large license plate in central position, the Italian firm was one of the few that maintained its asymmetrical tradition of mounting small plates on one side. However, the end of that trend is now announced due to the safety regulations that aims to protect pedestrians. The approval of cars in Europe is becoming stricter and with this change it could be easier to reduce damage to pedestrians in the event of a collision, as confirmed by official Alfa Romeo sources.

Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, head of design for the brand, confirmed the disappearance of the small lateralized license plate with immediate effect. In the new Alfa Romeo Junior they had already dispensed with it and it seems that the next ones will be the replacements for the Giulia and Stelvio. He stated that it was a decision made for security reasons and did not consider it a debacle. This way the cars will gain that symmetry that is always sought in designs. However, they will also lose that essence that has been present since the Giulietta Spider of 1955 and that has left unforgettable cars.

Put the license plate on one of the front wings served to clear the central part and to be able to put the legendary Alfa triangular “scudetto” grille. Now other design cues are being used such as the “biscione” integrated into the grill, in a high position, as seen on the Junior. It is still too early to know if the next Giulia and Stelvio opt for something similar. What is clear is that they will have electric propulsion system as they sit on the Stellantis STLA Large platform. Therefore, they will not have as many cooling needs and will be able to play with the design.
