Puig revealed a few days ago, at EICMA 2024, its reinterpretation of the iconic BMW R 1300 GS with its Pista by Puig preparation. This transformation into a high-tech and performance hybrid motorcycle combines the versatility of a trail bike with the power of a circuit motorcycle.
Thanks to its advanced aerodynamics and carefully designed geometry, this version allows us to drive fast, safe and fun, ideal for those who want to travel long distances without sacrificing performance.
BMW R 1300 GS Pista by Puig in detail
After making ourselves known in 2022 with the “Diablo”, a design project called Everflowing Design where the brand deposited its ideas on those accessories that could improve the experience of riding a motorcycle, and which would help improve its performance at an aerodynamic level, now come back with this R 1300 GS Pista by Puig. However, unlike this, the intention with this preparation is to develop a product kit that can be sold, assembled and used for the BMW R1 300 GS on the street, or track with just a few adjustments.
The aesthetics and colors for this project were a key aspect. On the brand’s 60th anniversary, they imagined this Pista by Puig as a tribute to old racing motorcycles: the two colors, the two-color graphic design by zones, the division of the parts by zones or the numbers.
Yellow as the company’s first logo and light gray in reference to BMW and the models it marketed at that time, such as the R60/2 from 1966. The simple lines, the rounded shape of the dome, with the upper part that surrounded the pilot’s helmet and opaque sides, referring to the old fairings.
The R 1300 GS Pista by Puig It has a series of elements responsible for forming its final image. Such as the front fender-brake cooler that channels air through its interior, also covering part of the rim to limit turbulence of the wheel when turning, while creating a direct air flow to the braking system. This channel is open at the bottom, so any small item that could slip inside would fall through the opening and not continue to the brake caliper.
For the wheels, the brand has trusted Rotobox and a 17” model made of carbon fiber. This change in weight affects the unsprung mass, reducing it so that the bike becomes more agile, easier to ride. The diameter of the previous wheel, different from the stock configuration, changes the geometry of the bike, tilting it forward for a sportier ride and more fluid direction changes.
Another “upgrade” are Galfer’s Wave discs, 320 mm in diameter and 6 mm thick, an improvement in performance to ensure good braking sensations and perfect effectiveness, maximizing performance and safety. As for the tires, Puig has opted for the well-known Pirelli Diablo, a guarantee of quality and performance.
Other elements that are also included in the R 1300 GS Pista by Puig are, for example, a new Sport screen, following the Retro-Racing lines of the set, with a rounded upper part in reference to the old competition fairings that housed the pilot’s helmet. inside its fairing, with its opaque sides. The dome, along with the headlight cover, creates a channel through which air flows and accelerates, improving the turbulence generated by the OEM dome, whether in the high or low position.
The screen adjustment mechanism allows us to have sufficient protection with a sport screen while reducing the frontal area of the motorcycle and thus improving the CX (penetration coefficient) and reducing the drag force of the motorcycle.
On the sides, two wing shapes inclined slightly forward to create down force on the front axle of the motorcycle, which is the phenomenon that occurs when air flows through the upper part of the spoiler causing downward pressure, and at the same time, Below the spoiler the air accelerates, creating low pressure in this area.
This produces an improvement in the stability of the motorcycle at maximum speed, and in turn has an anti-wheelie aerodynamic effect, preventing the electronic anti-wheelie from having to act, which acts by cutting acceleration until the front wheel returns to the ground, losing speed.
Likewise, at the bottom of the bike, a new, compact and aerodynamic keel fits perfectly with the R 1300 GS engine, creating a volume through which air can flow more quickly and without impediments. The lower spoiler channels and accelerates the air flowing past the keel underneath the bike. This creates downforce directly in the bike’s chassis, near the rear axle of the bike, without affecting the rear suspension.
Another interesting and functional part is the tank cover, an ABS cover that modifies the position of the rider and his relationship with the bike, allowing the rider to have more grip with his legs on the bike, which allows the bike to move better. This hard cover for a “soft” area of the motorcycle (remember that this piece has the material of the original BMW seat) also allows the entire tank of the motorcycle to be customized, either by painting it, covering it with vinyl or however the user prefers.
Laterally, above the engine, we find another aerodynamic aid: a methacrylate deflector that has three positions to fulfill different functions: It can be in the “open” position, so that the air flows directly inside its channel, such as when it is very hot, to cool the pilot’s legs and lower torso. It can be placed in the “standard” position, which is the most neutral position and intervenes the least, letting the air flow in a similar way as it would without a deflector, letting it pass. Or it can be “closed”, to divert air away from the pilot, so that air that is too cold/hot does not affect him.
Finally, the tail cover, made of ABS, an essential part to provide that sporty single-seater look for circuit drivers or those who do not have a passenger. With a minimalist design, it follows the lines of the subframe in a sporty and elegant way, with a small neoprene part where the rider can lean on. It can be painted, vinyled or kept black, it mounts in place of the passenger seat leaving space underneath to store a tool kit or documents if desired. It substantially lightens the rear of the motorcycle and gives it a totally different look.
At the ends of the handlebars we find the Diablo handlebar – rearview mirror protector. Machined from a block of aluminum and anodized in a sleek black finish, this spoiler-shaped aerodynamic component is a multifunctional product. It protects the driver’s levers and hands from possible unwanted impacts while, by rotating its position, it acts as a rearview mirror, allowing us to see what is behind us, thanks to its studied axle design and its movements.
The R 1300 GS Pista by Puig also includes the following accessories:
