Kawasaki launches a KLX150 XPL with African aesthetics, enduro wheels and old-fashioned mechanics

While a good part of the industry is betting on increasingly sophisticated motorcycles, loaded with electronics and driving aids, Kawasaki (and it is not the first time), has decided to look in the opposite direction in some markets. The Japanese firm has just presented in Indonesia the new KLX150 XPL 2027a variant that completely transforms the character of the well-known KLX150 to turn her into a little adventurer inspired by African rally motorcycles.

The denomination XPLderived from the word «explorer«He makes his intentions clear. It is no longer just a motorcycle focused on the purest off-road use, but a mount designed for those looking to explore tracks, paths and routes away from asphalt with an image very different from the usual one within the range. KLX. The change on the front is more evident. Kawasaki It abandons the aggressive features of the conventional versions and adopts a configuration clearly inspired by rally raid motorcycles.

Of course, it is obvious. The new set is dominated by a round LED headlight with a retro look, accompanied by a raised screen reminiscent of the mounts used in the great African adventures. The result is a motorcycle that seems to come from artisanal preparation, but developed directly by the factory.

This is the surprising mechanics of the new Kawasaki KLX150 XPL 2027

One of the most striking aspects of this KLX150 XPL is that it maintains a mechanical philosophy that has practically disappeared in Europe. Its engine is a 144 cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled, SOHC distribution and 2 valves, capable of developing around 12 hp and a maximum torque of 11.3 Nm.

However, what is truly unique is that it is still fueled by a carburetor Keihin NCV24. In an era dominated by electronic injection and strict anti-pollution regulations, the Japanese brand continues to bet in some markets on an extremely simple mechanical solution, easy to maintain and especially appreciated by those who travel far from any workshop.

In fact, the factory also retains the double start system, combining an electric motor with the classic pedal start lever. A detail that may seem anachronistic, but that still makes sense in regions where reliability and ease of repair are priorities. Like on the roads of Indonesia, too.

But beyond the adventurous aesthetic, the KLX150 XPL retains a fully off-road base. Steel perimeter frame is combined with a 35mm inverted fork and rear system Uni-Trak with adjustable preload shock absorber. As we see, the configuration is clearly aimed at overcoming obstacles and facing complicated terrain.

The spoked wheels maintain measurements typical of an authentic light enduro motorcycle, with 21 inches at the front and 18 at the rear. Thanks to this combination, the ground clearance reaches a remarkable 295 mm, a figure that allows you to tackle broken areas, stones or ruts with complete peace of mind.

Another of the great arguments of this little adventurer is her weight. The scale declares only 121 kg, a very light figure that places it among the lightest motorcycles in its category. Precisely that combination of mechanical simplicity, low weight and large diameter wheels is what has made this KLX150 XPL in one of the most striking developments recently presented in Southeast Asia.

Kawasaki sells this new version in a single finish decorated with the brand’s classic lime green combined with black details. And its official price in Indonesia is 44.8 million rupees, a figure that is approximately equivalent to 2,350 euros.
