The ultimate track driving experience

One more season Yamaha delights us with two of its most technologically advanced machines, the new R1 Race and R1 GYTR 2025. Two bikes that embody the racing DNA that the brand has had since it participated in its first motorcycle race just a few weeks after the company was founded in 1955.

It was the Y-A1 – Yamaha’s first motorcycle – that made its debut in the Mount Fuji hill climb and took victory on its first attempt. Since then, the firm has won countless races and championships, inspiring this competitive philosophy to its range of models. Among them, the R1 undoubtedly represents the brand’s sporting pinnacle since it was first introduced to the world in 1998.

Yamaha R1 Race 2025 in detail

Over the past decade, the European motorcycle market has seen significant changes as rider needs have evolved and with ever more stringent emissions regulations, the Supersport class has taken a new direction. In line with this, the future and development of the R1 will be fully focused on racing and track use in Europe.

The R1 Race 2025 is the embodiment of this commitment. Moving even closer to the YZR-M1 Grand Prix machine that inspires both the aesthetics and technology of the R1, the R1 Race incorporates a host of modifications and enhancements to exponentially improve its performance. For example, the MotoGP-style aerodynamic winglets on the top of the main fairing.

Designed and developed based on technical feedback from the team Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP-inspired, the new winglets maximise the effects of the R1’s anti-wheelie electronics, as well as improving front-end feel and response under braking and cornering. Made from carbon fibre to add as little weight as possible whilst ensuring strength and rigidity, the winglets not only generate downforce, but also offer a greater sense of stability and bring the R1’s look closer to modern MotoGP styling without compromising the R1’s evocative, aerodynamic design.

For its part, the new KYB 43mm inverted front fork The R1 Race has been completely redesigned and now features individual adjusters for rebound and compression damping on the left and right fork legs. Each can be individually adjusted, with the right leg for rebound damping and the left leg for compression, at both high and low speeds.

Each fork leg now features a base valve, designed to optimise pressure in the cylinder by limiting or completely preventing oil from flowing into the lower part of the fork. This new arrangement results in improved damping response, greater contact feel and better overall stability. A new Kashima coating darkens the gold/bronze colour for a true performance aesthetic.

To improve on-track capability, the R1 Race is equipped with a completely new front braking system, consisting of a Brembo pump and Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers. Responsive and high-performance, these new brakes take the R1’s stopping power to the next level.

The radial pump features a piston that moves parallel to the brake lever travel, applying pressure in a linear fashion as the rider pulls the lever, resulting in a refined feeling of control. The lightweight Stylema calipers produce their stopping power through four 30mm pistons, and are designed to optimise airflow for efficient cooling, preventing a reduction in braking performance after continued track use.

Likewise, the R1 Race incorporates a new material for the Seat cover with a new texturewhich offers increased grip while allowing the rider to shift their weight with ease. When cornering, this helps the rider feel more connected to their R1 and increases the bike’s sense of stability.

He 998cc CP4 enginederived from that of the Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP engine, with its uneven 270º-180º-90º-180º ignition sequence, delivers strong, linear torque. With a new high-efficiency intake system and specially designed valve lifters, this track-ready engine delivers optimum performance on the track. It produces 200 HP with a strong connection between the throttle and the rear wheel, making the R1 easy to control and intuitive to ride.

It is also equipped with Yamaha’s proven Microprocessor Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), which continues to use a lightweight ride-by-wire throttle position sensor (APSG) unit to give the rider excellent throttle feel. The APSG is comprised of a spring, slider and gear to produce varying degrees of resistance, replicating the natural, progressive acceleration feel of a traditional ride-by-wire system.

The R1 was one of the first bikes to incorporate MotoGP-derived intelligence in the form of a 6-axis IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). Equipped with gyroscopic and G-force sensors that monitor wheel lift, roll and yaw, as well as an accelerometer to measure forward-backward, up-down and left-right acceleration, the IMU transmits machine state data 125 times per second to the ECU.

This controls the R1’s sophisticated electronic aids such as Traction Control (TCS), Skid Control (SCS), Brake Control (BC), Lift Control (LIF), Launch Control (LCS) and a three-mode Engine Brake Management (EBM). In addition, the R1 RACE also features Yamaha’s Quickshift System (QSS) and Power Select (PWR) modes.
