The fourth edition of the Sustainable Circuit Index (SCI), produced by Enovation Consulting in collaboration with Professor Paolo Taticchi of the UCL School of Management, has been published, assessing the sustainability of motorsport circuits around the world. The SCI 2024 continues to use 21 criteria organised into seven key areas: certifications, accreditations, awards, environmental performance, social performance, economic impact and commitment to sustainability.
In this year’s edition, the Mugello Circuit has taken first place, being recognised as the most sustainable circuit in the world, followed by the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Silverstone, which occupy second and third place respectively. One of the novelties this year is the inclusion of temporary tracks in the SCI, due to their growing importance in several motorsport championships.
In this new category, the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Delfi Rally Estonia and Rally Sweden stood out as the top three, being evaluated separately from the permanent circuits.
Red Bull Ring, the circuit that has improved the most in terms of sustainability
In addition to the overall rankings, the SCI has recognised the Red Bull Ring as the circuit that has improved the most compared to the previous edition, highlighting its efforts towards more sustainable practices.
Other circuits, such as the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Circuit de La Sarthe (Le Mans), received honorable mentions for their advances in sustainability.
Of note is the decrease in low ratings in the overall score index, indicating that more tracks are adopting and improving their sustainable practices.
All this environmental awareness at motorsport circuits is a significant step forward for the sport. By adopting sustainable practices, these venues not only minimise their ecological impact, but also inspire the industry and fans to value sustainability, ensuring a more responsible future for racing.
